Hey folks, Looking to speak with anyone else from Ontario who got a rebate on a prime.

My local stealership insists that their is Tax on the rebate so have lowered my rebate from $5000 to $4400 + Change (don't have exact number) on my Lease Agreement. They said that it rolls the tax into the rebate to do it that way. I went back yesterday to get some clarification to which the girl in the Finance Dept had no Clue and the Salesman insisted that it was taxed.. I'm confused and going to have to either call The Ontario Ministry of Finance or go to another Toyota Dealership. Honestly just seems like the Stealership is trying to Rip me for another chunk.

Anyone know if the Rebates in Ontario are taxed?

That doesn't sound right to me.

When I purchased my Prime, I was told by the dealership that they no longer apply for the incentive on behalf of the customer. I think there have been too many delays in receiving payment.

I applied myself in early June, and they provided and signed all necessary paperwork for me. Mine was a lease as well.

I'm not aware of any taxes on the incentive, but if anything I would think it would be income taxes. I would do as you suggest and call the Ministry of Finance. They mention on the website to report if a dealership charges any fee, as that is not allowed. However, I guess this is not technically a fee.

How is the EHVIP incentive applied to the total vehicle lease or purchase price?
If a dealer provides a point of sale/lease discount, the dealer reduces the purchase/lease price of the vehicle equivalent to the full incentive value after all applicable costs (e.g., freight) and taxes have been applied. This reduction must be clearly noted on the bill of sale/lease. If a dealer has provided a point of sale discount, they must apply on behalf of the applicant. It is no longer submitted by the applicant directly.

Ontario Central Forms Repository - Form Identification

This is from March 2018 and is the most current form at the time of this writing.

In other words, the full rebate is reduced AFTER the vehicle total selling price including fees and taxes have been applied. (Previously, it's been applied before HST was added).

The dealership is right in the sense that the rebate is now applied after taxes but double check the math to make sure they're not taking taxes off twice. (i.e. applying it after tax and then adding HST to reduce it to $4,400 and change)

    Sounds extremely fishy to me...

My dealer said that they cant apply for it but they did fill out the form and I submit it. I think they're trying to get 600 dollars off of you.

The rebate might be gone soon as Doug Ford won the Ontario election and plans to get rid of the rebate. So act quickly. Also definitely call the ministry of finance.

I just read Joe's post we seem to have similar experiences.

Hello. We have purchased a Prius Prime, and are now awaiting delivery. Our dealership applied the rebate after all taxes were applied, and they are applying for the rebate

I am in a similar situation, was planning to upgrade to a Prime near the end of the year, but with the PC government looking like Ford is going to axe the rebate, looks like I will need to act soon if I want to cash in on the on the rebate. :(

I met with my dealer last weekend and was pleasantly surprised at what they offered me on my PiP on a trade (such that it may may not be worth the hassle of selling privately) so I plan to go back when I return from vacation in a week to see if if we can work out a deal. For now, I will be enjoying DisneyWorld with my family. :)

    We’ll see! :)

(But in all honesty, I want to follow this thread, which I will now by commenting! Lol)

Ontario ppl lucky they get 4,400 rebate. In BC, the rebate half that, at net 2,200 (rebate also applies after tax).

Should have bought my car in Ontario and used the $2,200 for a free roadtrip back to BC!!

The Ontario Government just announced that the Electric and Hydrogen Vehicle Incentive Program (EHVIP) is cancelled as of today.

Here is the quote from the MTO website:

"Applications will be accepted from dealerships, car owners or prospective car owners only if one of the following conditions has been met:
    • Eligible vehicles that have been delivered to consumers, registered, and plated on or before July 11 will receive the incentive.
    • Inventory that dealers have on lots or orders made by dealerships with manufacturers on or before July 11, will also be honoured for the incentive provided that the vehicle is delivered to consumers, registered, and plated by September 10."

Thanks... I’ve been on the fence for a while, giving serious consideration to trying to negotiate a deal on one, but I guess the decision has now been made for me. Guess I will hang onto the PiP longer for now....

It sounds like you are still OK if you purchase a vehicle that is on the dealer lot as of July 11th. As long as the vehicle that is currently on their lot is delivered, registered, and plated by September 10th....so if there is one you have your eye on....

Yeah, I noticed that, but the dealer didn’t have the exact build I wanted anyway.

In one way, it’s probably for the best, since my budget says I really shouldn’t be buying another car right now anyway, should pay down some other debts first. Lol.

There are also rumours of Canada possibly introducing federal incentives (since there were only three provinces along with BC and QC). Links below are a bit dated, but this may come back on the table with the change in Ontario... I can hope, anyway.

In the meantime, I will wait and see what the 2019 model offers.

I waited 7 weeks for a mid trim Blizzard Pearl. It was baloney and then some. Especially since my local dealer told me they had one on a dealer trade, then proceeded to blow me off for 2 weeks until telling me one was coming on a train from bc.

I'd have a tough time with this car if i didn't get the $5000. Honestly i was going to originally get a Fully loaded Prius instead. Then that damn VIP sale came along.

I picked up my 2018 Prime yesterday. We got the full rebate, I mean the dealer deducted the rebate from the price and will apply for it, the full amount and not even a subject of discussion.
Yes the new government of Ontario is closing down all "green incentive programs" no more rebates.

Congrats! Did you buy from the Burlington dealer, or somewhere else? What colour/package did you get?

Yes, if you read the wording of the ending for the program, any cars already in dealer inventory are still eligible for the rebate, as long as they are sold and plated by Sept 10. The rebate would not apply for any new inventory ordered from the manufacturer.

I am not sure what the rules are for inventory transfer between dealers. I presume they would also still be eligible.

My sales guy at Milton Toyota called me back yesterday in response to an email I sent him a couple days ago explaining he had a Prime technology model in inventory (though not my preferred colour), and told me it is still eligible for the rebate. I told him I would have to think about it and discuss with my other half, but I think I am going to stick with my PiP for now.

Got it at Ancaster Toyota, it's Hypersonic Red. Did some research online, went to one dealer and negotiated a price then went to this dealer and negotiated a better price. It took about 6 weeks to get as it had to be ordered and shipped from Japan. Interestingly there was another one being prepared for delivery and it was also Red. There is another Red in this area also. Maybe we can get some colour on the road in Ontario instead of grey..LOL.
Still quite a bit of reading and playing with the display and controls though. I feel a bit like Scotty on Star Trek saying "computer do......." This is sometimes fun, frustrating and just "oh s..." what did we do now? Did a partial charge at a shopping centre and that worked fine. Now have to get a charging unit for our parking bay in our building, that is turning out to be quite the process but it will get done. FYI, this our 3rd Prius so we do have that experience behind us it's just the technology has taken a huge leap over the past 10-12 years and it takes bit of getting used to it.

I know what you mean about a new exploration, lots of new toys to play with. 2 years ago I upgraded my loyal 2006 Prius to a Prius Plug In since the Prime (the car I was waiting for) was not yet available, and I had no choice to wait as my 2006 gave out at almost 400k km.

I do agree about more colours on the road, that is why both of our cars are blue. ;-)

FWIW, I bought the ChargePoint Home from AutoChargers in Richmond Hill, and have been happy with it, and the Ontario incentive covered half of it. I believe that rebate is completely eliminated now, no grace period. Most Prime owners don’t bother paying the ~$1k for an L2 as you will never recover that in the frugal gas usage in the car in HV mode, but up to you of course. :)
