I wanted to see if anybody has the actual Toyota 2008 Prius XM radio instructions. I have seen the 2004-2005 instructions that Metro made, but those are not Toyota install sheets. The 2008 Prius XM fit kit comes with brackets that are not highlighted in the 2004-2005 install and the XM antenna seems to be moved inside the car on the dash on the front passenger side.

I have tried searching here and on Google and come up with nothing.

Do you still have the install instructions for the sirius in a 2008 Prius?

If so could you send me a copy? I'm new, so I'm not sure how to send you my email address.

    Thank you,
    Jason

I went straight to the dealer and asked for the 2008 instructions and they printed them up for me. Don't install the antenna on your dash. The radio goes out when you drive near a tree or anything tall. Run the antenna out the back and place it like they did on the 2005 Prius. I just finished the install yesterday in an hour, and hate it. I didn't think it would work, but it was factory install instructions. I thought they knew something I didn't know. Nope! The antenna needs to go on the outside of the vehicle. I have had XM for years and never had a problem, because the antenna is on the roof. I will now be taking my car apart again and rerouting the antenna. Each time I do this I am afraid I will damage the Prius, and I love this car.:mad::eek:

Well from personal experience i installed my XM and put the antenna on the dash and have no problems with reception!!! Works well, its out of the way. I suppose it depends on who you ask, Try it both ways, see what works best for you , then make it permanent

    Good Luck,

I saw your posting on here and thought I would also give my two cents. I own a 2009 Magnetic Gray Metallic Prius and have the factory installation of XM Radio also included in my car which works with the MFD touch screen. The Toyota technicians installed the antenna on the passenger side dashboard near the front windshield. I started questioning the decision to place the antenna there almost right from the time I got my Prius since I know from owning an additional 3rd party XM Roady receiver that the antennas belong on the roof. I have had several losses in signal...too many to count over the past couple months I've owned my car. Signal losses are quite random, and I don't even need to have obstructions overhead. It got to the point where I actually had the antenna replaced this past Friday at my local Toyota dealership in hopes that would correct any issues. It has not. On the way home (about a 25 minute trip), I had 8 drops in XM Radio signal...4 of which were not even .25 miles from the Toyota dealership. This morning on the way to church, I drove through town, crossing over a bridge (no obstructions overhead) and I had an additional 8 drops in signal in about .3 miles. I have other stories I can cite if you're at all interested. Crazy and quite unacceptable in my view.

The people at the Toyota dealership have to me to let them know if this antenna works or not. I'll be contacting them within the next week or so. They have also told me that the factory antenna that is mounted to the driver's side dashboard is not weather-resistent (not made for outdoor use) and also does not have the magnetic surface so that it can easily cling to the roof of the Prius. Also, the antenna connection from my XM Road receiver is not compatible with the connection of the factory kit that's currently in my Prius (I thought my other antenna with the magnet might be the solution for my current install). I'm beginning to think that they need to install an antenna like this one in my Prius:

    XMFanStore XM-2SAA Micro Antenna

Just thought I'd share my experiences if it helps any of you.

As a fellow neighbor in WI (Appleton), I am also having a problem with my factory installed satellite radio. I just bought a 2009 Prius package #3 and they installed it as part of the deal and placed the receiver on the passenger dash. Yesterday I drove about 100 miles and the radio cut in and out for about 5 minutes and then it went silent for the remaining 1.5 hours, which seems crazy to me. Later on that evening when I returned it was working, but cuts in and out often when I am near trees or when I go under bridges. I was also wondering if there was a different place that the receiver should go...if anyone has any other ideas than the previous post please add them. You would think that if the car is "satellite-radio" compatible and the dealer installs it that it should work...but maybe that is asking too much

Not specific to 2008 but there is a Toyota XM install instructions posted here somewhere. Give me a couple of minutes...

EDIT: The 2006+ install sheets for both XM and Sirius are here. Consider using the Sirius antanna mounting instructions, as the sirius antenna goes on the roof behind the FM antenna.

Ah...this is perfect documentation and confirms what I was told at the end of 2008 where the XM Radio antenna is mounted on the driver's side dashboard vs. the Sirius Radio antenna is mounted behind the regular radio/stereo antenna on the roof. Thanks so much for finding this! I can definitely use this when I write back to the service manager who worked with me this past Friday.

I am really curious if the antenna I have listed in my previous response (see website link) would be compatible with the factory XM Radio kit.

Here's another question for all of you....are there any Prius owners out there that have the factory Sirius satellite radio installed in their vehicle with the antenna on the roof behind the standard radio antenna? If so, what are your experiences? Great reception? Losses in signal?

My Sirius radio's not the factory radio but my antenna is on the roof as the instructions show. Note that weather will affect your reception - we're having a rain/ice storm today and I had many more dropouts than usual, even compared to summer when the foliage is on the trees.

I am soo glad this post exists. I having been planning to have the XM radio kit installed by the dealer but had read somewhere that the antenna on the dashboard did not work well.

Presently I have a portable XM radio set up in my Prius. When I first put it in the car I tried the antenna on the dashboard in various positions and experienced loss of signal quite frequently. I ran the antenna to the back hatch and placed it behind the regular old antenna and it works great.

I guess this post has left me kind of scared to have the dealer install the radio kit if it is going to be a hassle with them about reception.

My feeling is that it should have been included in the package and not an 'add-on'! :)

Well...here is an update for all of you which has left me a bit frustrated at the moment...

This past Friday was roughly 6 weeks since I first e-mailed my contact at my local Toyota dealership on January 8th regarding the frequent drops in XM Radio signal. (This was a lengthy e-mail I typed up which took me a good 45 minutes to put together.) After 3 weeks, I hadn't heard anything from them, so I e-mailed to check in. They, in short, told me to please continue to wait while their technician investigate this further. Well, an additional 3 weeks went by, and still no word...so I e-mailed back this past Saturday. I got a response today from my contact. Basically, he has told me that my concern is forwarded to the Field Technician Specialist, then that person refers it to Toyota Engineers, and then they'll address it as the problem becomes more widespread. I was then directed to contact the Toyota Customer Experience Center myself to try and start the process of having the issue tracked.

It is just me, or does this seem like a step in the wrong direction? I don't feel that the issue with my XM Radio and my 2009 Prius is getting resolved in a timely manner. I'm not sure how to respond.

Just put a magentic mount antenna on the roof between the FM antenna and the hatch and route the cable to the XM receiver. Yeah, Toyota may "owe" you a satisfying response but there's a lot to be said for just fixing it.

I had the dealer install my radio and they said the instructions said to place the antenna on the dash. My sales guy who is very informed confirmed my research that the dash was not a good idea. Since the "factory antenna" does have the magnetic strip - they placed it on the roof. No one said anything about it not being weather proof. It looks a lot like the Roady2 antenna. I placed mine on the back right corner - which is where my "PriusXM" for my 04 was mounted. Works great.

I went to "East High" for 3 years, graduated in 70. Used to enjoy going down to "The Mark" and participating in the 75 cent Schlitz Malt Liquor Quart bottle night!
Ahhh, Misspent youth, oh look 3 quarters, I'll have another please!!!

Oh and just so this is still on topic, I installed per instructions, placed ant on dash, I have NO dropouts!!! Maybe it's because I am closer to the satellite being further south, nearer the Clarke Belt!

Mounting on the hatch outside works too, you just have to worry about water infiltration.(Leaks)

I just got the local dealer to install XM on my 2009 Prius and wish that I had read this thread before Friday, because they went with the dash install and it is terrible. Tons of dropped signals, at best I have 3 bars of signal, but most the time it is at zero bars. Why would the install sheet suggest a mounting that does not work?

I have an 08, installed a Sirius radio last week. Easy to install...went in no problems. Took less than one hour. I have the antenna on the roof behind the OEM antenna. I have purchased a shark fin and plan to put both in that when it arrives. I got the instructions for the install of the Sirius off Prius Chat...right here! I learned that all Prius radios are satellite ready...and make for an easy install. Shows up on the monitor...too cool!
