Another Can't Put Very Much Gas in, but a Little Different

All Prius in this series of the car the generation 2 can have this problem there is no resolve for fixing the fuel pump or the gauge sender It's not going to happen there's a bladder and a material in the way of you accessing any of those pieces unless you're in the United Kingdom You don't have this problem My resolve will be to get a couple of gas tanks from the United Kingdom market have them here at the ready or maybe a Yaris tank haven't tried it yet haven't got to this point at all in any of the four that we've owned here. What is it I don't know usually it's descending unit acting up or I guess in that skinny tiny hoes that comes from where you're putting the gas nozzle and actually penetrates the tank If you look on a Prius that thing is skinnier than your washing machine drain hose look at your Camaro and that pipe that goes from the fuel filler neck door to the tank is like a 2-in drain pipe for your tub in your house quite the difference there's also the fuel gets held up when you put it into the filler neck and you start to pump it drops down into this menagerie of pipes and things before it starts to head over to the tank I believe and all of that stuff is prime for something to act like vapor lock throw into the mix the summer and all with it the heat from the road and you've got a slow fill issue sure enough I have found that just filling slowly. Can make it all happen My regimen works like this with all generation twos I don't care if the car is in perfect condition and everything works like brand new and the car's got 9,000 mi on it never seen one of these but still I get the car the day I'm buying it from the people in their driveway I go straight to the gas station even if it says it's got a full tank just because we've been here and done this at the gas station I insert the nozzle in the tank and begin to fill when it kicks off it kicks off and then I creep fill it until I can see the gas in the filler neck and I have the nozzle from the gas pump withdrawn almost all the way out of the filler neck I can see the end of the feeling that dropping fuel into the little hole then when that is completely full and I can see the gas at an angle leaning just above the little hole that the filler neck of the pump goes in I remove it a few drops will drop on the quarter panel no matter why we have rags. Now I know in any Prius of this model that's worth its salt I'm going to easily go 400 mi 420 until I'm down to maybe two pips and then I run it on down until it flashes if it's a really good gas mileage getting generation to it'll make right around 500 mi on a tank but if it's got anything going on or high miles it's going to probably get around 420 440 and be flashing and you better be looking for fuel. And I do this a few times with a new car before I get comfortable with looking a lot of its gauge I have to know what goes in and what goes out in a normal run of a tank and I have to find this out two or three times to see if there's any inconsistencies after that I'm good for the life of the car. I'm not sure what else could physically be going on there are several lines and funny business that run to and from the tank to purge valves and the thing that holds the charcoal canister up there by the tank and all that stuff. There are some one way valves that could come into play so now you're ripping your gas tank and all that mess out and blowing through things with air hoses and checking one-way valves and well there you go Big job kind of model work can be fun if it's cool out and you got nothing better to do things like that generally removing gas tanks for me is not really a thing changing it for one that has a real fuel pump and ascending unit in it that I can access to the back seat that would be a game changer for any of my keepers but then again nowadays electric fuel pumps one in my Corolla just broke 400K one of those cheap $40 aftermarket airtech or whoever the heck it is fuel pumps The original has come out a long time ago. Of course the corolla's in all have no filling problems and things like that one day the car just doesn't start You don't hear the buzz in the back.

 

Try unhooking the 12V for 30 seconds or so and then reattach. Perhaps it was just a glitch and when it powers on again it will calculate it correctly.

Did you fill up at a nozzle you have used previously? I have run into nozzles that don't get along with this car.

 

Could be that the level sensor in the tank is on its way out, and is showing one pip on the gauge when the tank is actually about 1/2 full.
