Aluminum oil filter housing with drain valve

Customer at work ran out of oil after hitting something and blew up his 2020 Corolla engine. I grabbed a free filter housing and swapped it on my '15 Prius, that's how much I hate the cartridge.

 

With horizontal-mount oil filter it won’t drain that complete through that centre spigot?

Crossing my fingers it is the correct tread pattern. I think @xliderider figured out the correct one but I didn’t catch onto the part number I’m afraid…

 

It looks like it is the right size for the Prius.

What keeps the oil in the filter housing? I don't see any type of valve on the brass fitting. Does it come with the top that normally screws into the threaded hole where that brass fitting is attached? As shown in this picture?

Note: oil filter housing in the picture is not the right size for the Prius, but the smaller part that screws into the top is the same.

Interesting concept. I would rather just get the spin-on housing.

 

The filters come with a snap in plastic piece that drains the oil from the canister the same way, what am I missing here?

 

The aluminum underpanel mod is motivation for all this, if I'm not mistaken.

 

I just did this on my last oil change.... and it's such an easy, cheap modification.... makes life so much easier.

 

My Scion iQ has this metal filter housing. There is a spring loaded “Sorry game piece” fit upside down that holds the oil in. In the iQ the whole filter assembly is vertical, so unscrewing the housing leaves a “cup” full of oil. Hence there is that filter drain. What I didn’t understand during my first iQ oil change was that that little cap and gasket doesn’t keep the oil in but is a secondary seal. So I didn’t use the special tool which presses the “sorry piece” in releasing the oil. When I unscrewed the housing a mess of oil spilled out. Now I just let it be messy. The iQ does not have a panel in this area so I guess they made the housing metal for durability in case of impact from road debris.

Your last note is what concerned me, it doesn’t fit the Prius?

 

@AzusaPrius Maybe this funnel will fit/help? That’s a 3/8” extension attached to the filter tool on the inside and the ratchet wrench on the other. Funnel is one of a three piece set purchased at Ross Dress for Less.

If not I’d consider cutting the aluminum panel with a Dremel quite honestly.

^ The filter is mounted horizontal; oil will will flow down, not into that funnel.

Assuming the aluminum shield is a pain to remove, yeah cutting an opening is best approach I think, and just stick with stock oil filter cap. Or spin-on conversion, if ambitious.
