Hi all, just joined so excited to start talking and contributing.

I've searched the messages pretty extensively, and I know this topic has been covered tangentially, but I don't think anyone's directly addressed it.

Ok, I just got a black pkg. 8 2006 Prius and I'm committed to upgrading the wheels, probably to 16".

I want to spend and get the lightest possible forged wheels. So, this really isn't about steel wheels and winter tires and such, and not really about Scion wheels either. I wanted the Wedsport wheels from tirerack (I really wanted SSR Comps for weight reasons, so if anyone can figure that out please let me know), but they do NOT have the air sensors for it and the 2006 models.

So, where does that leave me? Should I just wait on the Wedsports? Should I explore getting the JDM wheels from Sigma? Does the Tom's forged wheel accept sensors, and is it actually light?

You can see my dillema. I would imagine that there are going to be lots of 2006 owners in the same boat soon, so hopefully this turns into a useful discussion.

    Thanks!

Sorry but this has actually been covered indetail in no less than two other threads, so don't get your hopes up for this being a useful thread.

As stated in the other threads, the sensors in the stock wheels would have to be moved to the aftermarket wheels. THe only place toget extra sensors would be from Toyota for now, and they are running in short supply simply filling their manufacturing needs. But you already have four sensors to use, you don't need more. Most wheels SHOULD fit just fine, but until it is tried, there is no guarantee. I got a great deal on a set of Scion wheels, so I'm going to use them for a while, until I find a nice set of super-light 17 inchers. For now, I am going to move the valve stem sensors to these wheels and use them. This process will work just fine. Once the wheels are mounted and the pressures set, simply reset the system and you're done. Period.

Will the Wedsport wheels work with the sensors? Most likely, but you won't know 100% until you try. TireRack won't sell you the sensors. As far as I know, they only sell the complete aftermarket systems.

Your first option is to buy the wheels and tires unmounted, and then have Toyota or another tire shop switch the sensors. If it works (and it should) great, if not, return them or sell them on eBay. Your second option is to not buy them. Your third option is to buy a set of wheels that you know will work with the sensors.

    hi there,
the whole point of the question is to fish out the subtleties of mounting the sensors themselves. i have a lexus that i already did the sensor swap on, so i know in principle that i can put my existing sensors in new wheels.

i'm trying to find actual experiences with these particular sensors, and trying to see if there are any updates on forged wheels people have tried on 2006 models.

that feels very different from previous posts on scion (too heavy), snow (CA), and pre-2006 wheels (totally different problem).

even if someone had pictures of the sensors mounted in current wheels that would help.

I plan on taking pictures of the sensors when I swap the wheels this week. I'll post them in my original thread.

So far there are NO experiences for swapping wheels on the 2006. No one has done it yet. Sorta like the VaisTech AIC-100i. I was the first to install it in an '06, and found there were differences.

Like I said, if you want the wheels, you may have to just order them and try it. You'd be the first one with forged wheels, and can enlighten us all.

Thanks for the definitive clarification, it just might come down to me being the guinea pig I guess...

Will definitely follow up with updates.
