Is there a way to adjust the brightness of the buttons on the steering wheel? As I was driving my new '05 Driftwood BC home last night, I noticed that the controls were very dim and almost impossible to see. I tried adjusting the brightness control, but that only affected the CRT display (mileage, fuel gauge, etc.).

    Any suggestions?

:| Sorry..!! The steering wheel lighting has only TWO LEVELS:

Dim -and- OFF (when all lights are off)

Personally, I wish they were a bit brighter. The "up side:" You can learn to use them by "feel."

Your dealer's service department can make the adjustment using the scanner.

 THANKS IsrAmeriPrius..! I wasn't aware that a Dealer Scanner could adjust steering wheel lighting brightness.

Yup, one of the many strange adjustments that can only be done at the dealer.

STEERING WHEEL LIGHTS CAN BE BRIGHTENED??

Really?? How much brighter can the dealer make the lights?, i.e. where are they set initially on the brightness scale? Has anyone had this done, and if so, how much did it cost? I would LOVE to have the lights brighter. I feel like I'm driving a cave at night.

Hmm. Didn't notice that one in the list of dealer customizable settings. Another one for them to do on my next oil change. I am also having them turn on the 30 second passive alarm. Hopefully this will also lock the doors, as sometimes I forget to hit that little black button.

You should be able to get it done for free within the 20K/1yr adjustment period, which alignment also falls into. Which by the way is yet another thing I am having them do.

DanMan32, what is the 30 second passive alarm? What does it do?

Also, what is this "adjustment period" you spoke about?

Howdy: I just called my dealer to ask about the steering wheel lights and the "20k/1yr adjustment period". Their resident Prius gurus are both out of the shop until Monday, but the service rep I talked to said he had never heard of either. Warranties cover defects, according to him, but if there is some minor adjustment that an owner wants which is not actually a repair or replacement, he is willing to do that. He didn't know of, nor has ever filled out a request for, having the steering wheel lights brightened.
As for the 20k / 1yr adjustment period...he never heard of that either. Most of these small maintenance issues are covered by a 12k / 1yr warranty unless specified otherwise. I'll check back on Monday when the gurus return and maybe get some answers.
Where did the information about the dealer making the lights brighter come from?

I went to a 'New Car Orientation' at my dealership. They specified an adjustment period of 20K/1yr. 12/1 sounds more like it, my dealer may be more lenient. It is a period to fix all those little anomolies.

Many passive alarm systems automatically arm themselves a period of time after car is off, doors are closed. This is true passive. Normally, the alarm doesn't arm until the doors are locked, which is not a passive process. I am hoping the passive alarm feature will also lock the car, as I think I sometimes forget to lock it. Without having to use a key, that's easy to do.

Then, I could get in a habit of making sure the back door is locked (can't do that with the front door, might unlock it.)

There is a specific passive door lock feature...I think it is seperate from the passive alarm setting.

    8) I went to Performance Toyota here in Omaha. I spoke with the Prius tech. He was unable to find any way to adjust the brightness controls on the steering wheel. He took me out to the shop and showed me what the scan tool would allow, and this is not one of them...

I believe you are thinking of the relock feature, that if you unlock the car (as in touching the doorhandle with SKS), but do not open any doors, it will re-lock. Normally it will wait 30 seconds, but can be set for 60.

I don't see a setting for steering wheel illumination. There is general illumination settings for DRL/Auto function, but that's only available in Canada.

Well crud, I think you're right again (as usual) Danman...I totally misread the passive mode thing thinking that locked the car...I've been spreading misinformation on that for weeks now.

I can see those on this forum having misconceptions when they don't have the repair manual. I took the time to obtain the repair manual piece-by-piece, and read through quite a bit of it.

However, it's sad when dealers make misconceptions, and they HAVE the manual (I hope anyway).

So then I'll ask again.. is there a way to have the car automatically lock when I walk away from the car? Seems like it would be a great idea for some people and should be settable. Doesn't seem like it would be that hard to do either. FOB out of range, 5 4 3 2 1 lock.

Nope, unless the 30 second passive alarm setting works as I hope, then you'll come close.
