Adding LED Strip to Hatch. How to Tap Into Wiring For Rear Lights?

There is a little cover on the inside next to the light assembly.

 

In this video you see the cover that I mean:

I don't know if you have a constant 12V from the rear light assembly and also don't know if you want to put in on the inside or outside. I assume inside for opening the hatch? Why not wire it through to the existing trunk light?

 

To get to the rear tail lights on the body looks like you have to take apart just about the entire rear hatch area panels
