Adapter for charging port.

    Does any out there know in there is an adapter (not a cable) that can be plugged into the charge port, and the cable from a public charge station can plug into it, this allowing me to charge my car at one of the many charging stations across the country. I don't even care if it charges at 110v while plugged in. I just want to be able to plug my car into one of these stations. The majority of the plugs at these stations don't accept the plug in my car

    You're looking for the wrong public charging stations.

    The car's charge port is a J1772 port and that's standard across 120V and 240V stations. The ones with the wrong plugs are DCFC or Direct Current Fast Charging stations and the Prime doesn't have it.

    If you use plugshare.com, use the filter for J1772 (or just enter your vehicle type) and you should be able to find those compatible stations for the Prime.

    You might also look for stations that are free. Seems to me like the ones that are not free cost a lot more per mile than a gas station. (Not to mention that they take a lot longer and don't get you nearly as far.) When I'm on a road trip, I only charge on overnight stops and when it's free. Otherwise, at 50-60 mpg, it just isn't worth the bother.

    Yeah. Up here, they're priced assuming you're charging at 6.6kW so that's fine if you can. But for Prius Prime owners (and I guess the majority of RAV4 Prime owners), 3.3kW means the charging cost is 2x since we can only charge at half the power.

    im a bit confused. when I go to a chargepoint (free) for about a 2 hour charge my car registers 31-35 miles EV. this also is from my house 120V garage charge - about 5 hours. New England area. I was always under the impression that J1772 took about 2 hours. so is everyone saying that the 'time to fully charge" is a Prius prime limitation" ??

    J1772 can be either L1 (120V) or L2 (240V). I charge at work at 120V and at home at 240V. Both EVSE cables have J1772 connectors. J1772 is the protocol that specifies the number of wires, the position of the connectors, communications protocols, etc.

    That's correct. When EV charging standards were implemented, they had the foresight to come to an agreement to a single standard plug (J1772) for 120V and 240V charging (recall that was in the early 2000s and they saw what happened with cellphones with each manufacturer dictating the type of plug their phone would use which meant a drawer full of old chargers when people changed phones and they didn't want a repeat with EVs).

    However, they forgot about DCFC charging so we're left with 4 major types - CHADeMO, CCS, GB/T and Tesla. Oh well, could be worse.

    Anyway, so the good news is at the public charger (Level 2) and home charger use the same plug. The Prius Prime can accept up to 3.3kW. Your home outputs 1.4kW so the outlet is the limitation. At a public station, the Prime may be the limit as some stations can dispense power up to 6.6kW. Note that the car takes care of the power input so there's no worry about using a higher power charger.

    This point seems to confuse a lot of people: A charging station may be capable of delivering 6.6kW, but the charger in the car will only pull what it wants, up to what the charging station is willing to deliver. The limit for the Prime is 3.3kw. This is what the J1772 protocol sorts out.
