    lol = laugh out loud.
rofl = rolling on the floor laughing

Dang, I use TRAC as traction control since that's what Toyota uses (as opposed to TCS). I'd use A-TRAC but I don't know if our Prius is equipped with that version of traction control.

I can't believe we are having this! I deal with tons of acronyms at work. My company actually has a list of acronyms, if you print that out, it's about 4 inches thick.
I know at least one acronym is made up of other acronyms!
I guess acronyms are wonders of the engineering world.

side note: i don't mean this list isn't good tho.

Really. Even just the word "Priustoric". I'd buy it. Might be too subtle for some.

Ha funny!... thats actually what it means!.... lol = "laughing out Loud! Used very commonly in chat rooms.

Wow... I finally found this site... can we pin this somewhere where its easier to find? Thanks to whoever started this list.
I've been on the forum for a few days now, but I still get totally lost with the abbreviations?.... I'm sure many are intimidated to join in and talk for fear they don't have a clue what we are talking about due to the abbreviations?
It would need to be maintained by someone or open to editing by someone"s" that can add to.
Most topics start without prior explanations of what the terms mean... they just start using them.... then tons of other people join in and a newcomer like myself feels like a real dummy trying to ask questions?

This is the site that really got me going.... please go there to see the references.. http://priuschat.com/-t3971.html
Here are some abbreviations from this site alone that I don't see even on this post:
    1. TSB? - post #1
    2. TSC's - post #12
    3. NTF - post #15
    4. IMO - post #15 & 131
    5. U44 - post #21 After reading post 50, only then I realized its part of the VIN#.
    6. YG - post #24
    7. ODO - post #29 & 136
    8. SSC-40E - post #35
    9. 40D - post #35
    10. TAC - post #35
    11. IMHO - post #62
    12. ODO - post #71 Is "odometer a fair guess?"
    13. HUMU - post #86
    14. OTOH - post #100
    15. ROT (Rule of Thumb) - post #100 "thands Devils Advocate for adding the meaning. But this may still need to be added to the list.
    16. MSS: - post #164
    17. EPA - post #166 "this may not be obvious to all"

Wow.. after reading "TSB" over and over.. I still don't know what it means?

If I found this many abbreviations not on this list by looking only on this this one thread.. how many more are there throughout the forum?

Just a bit overwhelming to a new person!

We need some way that folks can add abbreviations yet the list be protected from jerks that just want to be cute.
Maybe the moderators?... or anyone with over a 1000 posts or similiar... I don't kow the limitations of the software.
    thanks....

The original was a good list, very helpful and should be put in the FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions). However, acronyms are here to stay and, IMO (in my opinion) :D you just have to plunge in and start catching onto them through inference and experience. It's not unique to this Prius forum - for example if you are a WDW (Walt Disney World ) freak and go onto their website forums you could start talking about your DH (dear Husband), the future of COP (Carousel of Progress), MS (Mission Space) and the like...

The suggestions above can only be hoped to be understood my a compilation of knowledge from months and years of browsing on forums.

Why make the code so secret and elusive?.... that only turns people off and they leave. I"m not saying don't use the code.... because it makes for efficient communication... but give the code book too!

I agree that many of these are used commonly in other forums.... especially "lol" thats what started this question going in the first place.

I am not trying to bring any condemnation of any type for not having the "universal glossary of all world forums" handy......

But I did want to point out that many of the people who have enough money to afford a nice car like the priuse have been busy workers all their life and may not be computer geeks that spend hours in chat rooms?

I myself spend hours on the computer.. but in configuration, troubleshooting and working on them etc... And Ive been messing with computers since the 286 was moving to the 386.... I remember when I thought I was hot stuff cause I had my 3000.00 pentium 90. I remember when it was cool to have 4 meg or ram instead of 2 or even 1, like the others on the market had.

But in all that, I have never found much interest in hanging out in chat rooms until now with priuschat! It is extremely informative but can get very technical "which I like", but the technical talks tends to get very deep in terms that are more easily expressed through "acronyms".

I think the whole purpose of creating this forum in the first place was not so all the "experts" could talk about issues... however, I could be wrong..... I guess only Danny can answer that? But I thought it was to provide a platform for the unlearned to discuss concerns and ask questions too.

Many have "never" been on another forum and the only reason they popped on this one was due to a google search or word of mouth etc.
I believe Google I how I found it!
It is after all the best resource and easiest to use for the prius..... there is another prius site out thier, but I don't feel thier software is as userfriendly as this one.

A talented musician attracts other talented musicians... and in like manner... the more we make this user friendly for novices alike, the more the resources here will actually do some good for the public.

Historically, forums were so complicated to use that only the computer geeks could figure them out!
Novices.... although they can be trying.... often have very objective viewpoints that the veterans oversee.

Anyway..... its a good resource that someone started... especially if it can be found easily....so valuable, that maybe we could even attach it to the "myassitant wizard?" also?

Anyway its just my suggestion... and I'm pretty new to the forum..... From my viewpoint it would be very helpful.... from a veteran.. maybe not...

But just remember..."everything" is easy once you know it!
Ever try to put together a desk or barbecue grill etc...How about build a computer for your first time!.... its crazy the first time... then after that you could do it very quickly.....

Sometimes it takes months for new folks to finally figure out what the heck we are talking about out here before they finally post thier first comment....and even then, they appear very shy and guarded.......

I am a pretty technical person..so I jumped right in and asked questions even though I didn't really know what I was talking about..... and I'm sorry to say, a few jackals tried to cut me to ribbons for being so clueless....

But many are not so brave...... why not make it easier?

I the defence of the "experts" sometimes they get into a technical discussion that is somewhat detailed and fall into these abbreviations to save time. This provides us a reference for theROU ( Mac term for the Rest Of Us) to follow these fast but very informative discussions. Over time people will learn, become informed and inform the rest of us!

Oh I know!.. and in my writing, I defended using them to promote efficiency!
We just need a roadmap located somewhere else so we can catch up faster.

Try reading a medical journal or a book on any subject that is different than what you are used to. Whether medical, electrical, plumbing, drafting or you name it... without a glossary it would take forever to figure it out.

Many may take the attitude "well I had to learn it the hard way.. so can they"

If thats your attitude, then why have you ever grabbed a manual for anything?... Aren't you glad someone made it for you?
It kept you from having to reinvent the wheel and saved a ton of time? This forum and the lingo is very foreign to many.

If you don't want to help in helping anyone else, thats your decision you get to make.

Medical Journal or Book I spent two years learning the vocabulary so they could teach me Medicine. I love picking up an manual for anything and learning the language. Now if I could just find some one that would send me to college for the rest of my life I would change my major every three years!

Believe me.. I tried to avoid making this suggestion...I did searches and all you find are more of the same... you can read and find 50 of them to never find the definition!

If no one else would appreciate such a glossary I would...I myself already know about 90% of what would be in it, but I have no clue where to find the remaining 10%.

Others may know much less... many will just give up and feel intimidated about asking and/or just leave the forum to never come back.

Probrably the same thing you would do if you happened upon an advanced math class forum and you could not find list of the terms used.

I'm really not trying to cause trouble... If I hear from someone in authority that its not practicle nor feasable to consider, I won't mention it again.
