ABS failure

It's probably not, as brakes aren't technically part of the powertrain.

And I know that the regenerative braking doesn't really use the brakes, but hell... try to approach it from that angle and get them to at least reduce the cost somewhat.

At 6092 miles my ABS and Brake lights came on. Fortunately I forgot what I read in the manual and drove the car to the dealer with normal brake function. They replaced the ABS actuator and resistor but did not reconnect the dimmer switch. (It took another day to reconnect the switch.)

 

I had a wierd case last year where a brake light bulb burned out, but instead of an open circuit like the usual case, it shorted, and this actually caused the ABS light to turn on and the car defaulted to mechanical brakes only (no ABS, no regen during braking), so check your brake lights, including the high-mounted light (which was where I had the bad bulb)..

 

We have a 2008 Prius and ABS lights and warning came on and went to have it checked at a mechanic shop and they said the programming had been erased.nobody has a scanner here and the car had it come on once before but no codes,now this anyone else had a ABS software glitch?

 

In the worst case if it was actually the ABS pump, it will cost you $$$.
I replaced the ABS pump on my old Honda (yes, it happens to Toyota/Honda also, don't doubt it.) Unless it is a short, whenever there is a light, there was a code thrown.
My dealer wanted $2500 (inc. labor) with new parts. Eventually I got it down to $1800 for a refurbished part.
Later on, I found it on BMW forum that there are people who could refurbish the module for you (send them the ABS module, they will send it back once it is done) for about $300-500. You then have someone install it at your preferred shop (labor cost is not that high actually. It is the part that is costly.).
Anyway, just FYI. Search the web for such people if you want to take a bit risk and save money. If you need to, go to roadfly.com (originally a BMW-only forum), and ask guys over there. I haven't been there for a long time since I sold my probemetic BMW.

 

What is a "mechanic shop"? Suggest you visit your local Toyota dealer for a diagnosis since the braking system is quite special and it is unlikely that a non-Prius specialist will be successful diagnosing its problems.

 

only when my ignition coil was failing. i would get abs lights in long left hand turns.. not sure why.. but after replacing the coil (since the problem eventually got worse and started to shudder) the problem went away.
