    Hi everyone,

I would like to ask a few questions about my Prius that perhaps some of you could help me with.

First up, I should state that I live in Thailand (from the UK). I bought my Prius about 10 weeks ago. The model I bought was the top model except for the TRD sportivo version. In Thailand they call it the "Top Grade". As can be seen here; On www .Toyota. co.th/en/models/prius/prius_spec.asp

(Sorry admin if posting this link like this before 5 posts is really bad but it's only to a Toyota site so I hope you don't mind)

So here are where my questions really begin :)

First, how do I know what generation/model this is or relates to in other countries?

Secondly, I have been told many many times that the touch screen is not available in Thailand no matter how much I am willing to pay. Are there any other options for aftermarket systems that would integrate seamlessly into the Prius?

Finally, I would like to ask about the reversing beep sound. I have the parking sensor that beeps when I approach an object in reverse but my car also beeps when reversing incase I forgot. Is there a way to disable the original reversing beep?

I have spent a lot of time trying to find this information but it is very difficult. I don't speak Thai well enough to call Toyota directly and my girlfriend is useless with this kind of thing. I wish I did more research before I bought the car (maybe would have gone up to the Camry in hindsight) but this is my first car so I guess I have a lot to learn. Many thanks for your time.

From the specs your model is similar to a Generation 3 Package 4 Prius in the USA. Package 5 has 17 inch wheels and tires.

The dealer can configure the reverse to only beep once, you can as well, with a ODB-II programmer. (ScanTool II as an example)

Not sure what you're after. I think the car grades vary around the world depending on local market requirements etc. The RHD Prius gets the head up display but the American version doesn't, for example.

Jimbo is right, the dealers can switch the reverse beep to a single beep/tone when reverse is engaged.

Hope you're enjoying your new ride, esp the fuel economy.

Hey Jimbo, thanks for the reply. It's appreciated. I'll get the missus to take it in and get the beeping sorted out next week when I return home.

Out of interest, do all packages that you know of in The USA have the touch screen navi built in? It seems really strange I simply can't get it in Thailand. Especially with it being such a prominent feature for the Prius. It can't be a supply issue since the Camry has the option for this feature from the same dealer. :/

Well, not really. See Toyota Vehicles : Toyota Announces Prices for 2010 Prius / Toyota (prices are old). If you pick any of the packages, yes, you'll get the nav system, but the packages aren't required.

I have the head up display. I'd rather have the touch screen display though :)

I really do like this car, but I feel cheated to not have that feature. The only reason I think I should have gone up to a Camry is because of the touchscreen. Maybe I'm just being silly but I just came back to the UK for a short trip to see even basic model Prius have the touchscreen. :/

I haven't fully learned to drive my car for best fuel economy yet but I'm getting there. If I could understand the displays properly, it would help :p

Well I hate to disagree with you but the gen3 basic 'T3' UK Prius doesn't have a touchscreen and neither does the T4. Only the top of the range T Spirit has it. Either that or I've been sold a dud

Just a silly question but which model Prius do you have? The gen2 Prius 2004-2009 had the touchscreen on all models but the later gen3 2009-2011 doesn't. Maybe the US models get it throughout the range on the gen3? But again its local market forces. We get front fogs on the base model upwards whereas our American friends only get them on their top model.

In the US, Gen 2 (04 to 09 model year) all got color touchscreens, regardless of whether you got nav. Even the most stripped down models w/o aux input jack and SKS had touchscreen aka color MFD.

For us, Gen 3 (began with 2010 model year), you ONLY got a touchscreen if you got nav system, which comes w/every package choice. But, picking a package is optional. So, no nav == no touchscreen.

Hmm that is quite interesting. It sure does make me feel a bit better about not having it. It seems every Prius I have seen in the last week has had it built in but I guess we see what we want to at times.

Does anyone know what the options for an aftermarket touchscreen would be?

It looks like it will be difficult to properly fit a screen into the dash without it looking a bit shabby. My other thoughts are whether the steering wheel controls will work?

I did some research and it seems that my car sits somewhere between the T4 and the T-spirit. I have for example the all round tints, parking sensors, cruise control and LED lights but I don't have that other part I keep nagging about ;)

What do you mean by touchscreen? The Gen II has touchscreen MFD, but this is not available on the Gen III, so I assume you mean touchscreen NAV? Here in the U.S., the touchscreen NAV is pretty crappy but I understand European Prius with this option have HDD-based NAV and much better screen.

Well, I guess I mean the Navi. I would settle for a DVD touchscreen interface with a decent bluetooth link to my iphone. Ideally I would like the Navi but if it really is going to be crappy, then maybe i'm better off with a Garmin or something separate and just get the DVD.

The missus was a good girl today and did some research for me. I think we have found a place who fits the DVD and/or Navi for 35,000 Baht (£700). Seems cheap. I will let everyone know how I get on with that.

I would be a little careful fiddling around with the electronics here in Thailand, especially on the Prius, just make sure you have a competent tech to do the installation, otherwise, it may cost $$$ to bring it back to your dealer to unfix the problem.
As far GPS navigation here's concerned, it would be the best bet to check & get the Kenwood HU which comes with Garmin navigations maps(check on the map update availability & costs as well). Otherwise, just pick up a separate Garmin Nuvi altogether. Other brands of aftermarket HUs here do have alternative nav maps, but knowing Thailand the way it is, it'll be better off driving w/o such nav maps, it's useless.
Judging on the pros & cons of a touchscreen, it may be worth considering using the existing system & hook up a touch tablet via AUX, it may be a more flexible & cost effective option. :) Audio, Video, GPS maps & an ebook to read at bedtime! :)
