??? about battery replacement. Also rear-ended.

    Well, our 2005 Prius has 146,000 miles on it. The warning lights went haywire today. A quick trip to O'Reilly confirmed it -- REPLACE HYBRID BATTERY PACK.

    I guess since I'm in Missouri I'm SOL? 100,000 miles has long since passed. Anyone had any luck calling Toyota and talking their way into some help...especially when you were below 150,000?

    One last question -- the car was recently rear-ended pretty hard (by a person with no insurance or job, BTW). Is it possible for a rear-ending to cause damage to the battery? Might as well explore every avenue...

    I don't think it harmed it...really it looked like only the bumper was damaged.

    I've talked to the owner of Greentec. Almost bought a Gen 3 from him. I'll probably get a battery from him. What does it typically cost (and what is the warranty) from the dealer?

    Greentec is offering Lithium Ion for Gen 2...which sounds a little intriguing. I wonder how much that helps the MPGs...

    If I were you, I would get ahold of PC user ericbecky. I am confident he can at a minimum advise you on this but, will likely have a solution for you.

    I don't think I would trust O'Reilly, or any other independent shop, to diagnose a failed HV battery pack.
    I think you need a second opinion from a Toyota dealer.

    a hard knock in the rear end could definitely damage the battery. i would proceed with caution.

    Hey everyone. Here is the update.

    Car is at one of the local Toyota dealers. It's confirmed: Batter pack needs replacing.

    I've contacted Toyota, and they're supposed to get back with me within one business day...to see if they'll throw me a bone. I expect they will not.

    My insurance company basically flat out told me they wouldn't cover it... since there is no way to prove that the rear-ending caused the battery any damage. Also the fact the car is 10 years old and has 146,000 miles on it.

    What I expect will happen is Toyota won't help me much, so I'll end up taking it to Greentecauto.com

    I can get a Lithium Ion battery from them for $2500.

    For $2500, you can get a brand new battery from Toyota......that'll last you another 10 years, most likely outlast the car. Why go with anything else?

    li-on for gen II sounds interesting, are the expecting better mpg's? not sure i've heard of anyone doing this yet. please keep us posted, all the best!(y)

    I've talked to the owner about it. He made it sound like MPGs wouldn't increase a whole lot, but it should last longer. They offer a much longer warranty (5 years) on them too. They claim to have just started doing them. They've only done 4 so far.
