A few questions from an excited new owner!!

    I just picked up my Blizzard Pearl Technology Package (I live in Canada) and finished the 100 km drive home. I just cleaned the bugs off the front, and now have a few questions I hope someone can help me with....

    1) The navigation system....I don't drive a lot where I don't know where I'm going. I don't want the map to always be on the screen. I'd much rather have the satelite radio screen remain on. Right now after 10 seconds or so, the nav. map pops back up. I can't figure out how to change this....please say there is a way as this would be a huge annoyance to always have to hit the SAT button to see what song is playing....

    2) I didn't take their offer to protect my leather seats for the mere price of $300 + dollars...can anyone tell me what they used to protect their seats...I'm thinking Canadian Tire or some type of store should sell leather protector that I can apply myself.

    3) I just tried to program the garage door opener and didn't get it to work....any tips???

    4) I was surprised the back up camera wasn't integrated in the rear view mirror, but instad showed up on the nav. screen. Is this a Canadian thing??

    5) The salesman told me that a survey would be coming my way soon, but Toyota only accepts 10 as a good response. If I gave him, say, a 7 or 8 on something Toyota views this as a failure and too many of these and he is out of a job...sounds fishy to me, but is it true??


    Thanks, I love the car so far and I will get around to reading all 500+ pages of the owners manual very soon. These are just a few things I would like answered and from browsing the forum many of you can answer these much faster than I could find them in the manual!!

    I live at Montreal, except the first wave of Prius3, there will be no Technology Package until October. So I ordered a Premium with Solar Panels, and I have to wait at least middle of August to pick up.

    Hi Flex:

    First off, congratulations on the arrival of your brand new 'baby' from an envious fellow Canadian who would have loved to have had the Technology Pkg but went with the Premium Pkg with Solar Panels also in Blizzard Pearl. Will be picking mine up September 01, 2009.

    As regards your questions. I can only answer a few for you but I am sure when others see this post they will be more than willing to add their thoughts as well. For me the two I am going to reply to are #4 and #5.

    If you go with the NAV (and it is only available in the 'Technology' Pkg in Canada) the backup camera is in the NAV. All other models have it located in the RearView Mirror. For the US models the Backup Camera from what I could find out is only in the NAV.

    As regards to your sales person and his comments about the Survey - being from Newfoundland it does indeed sound fishy :) When it comes time for my survey I will tell it like it is and that is the only way they will improve. He has nothing to worry about if he has done his job right and made you a happy customer.

    Last point, is take a good look around the Prius Chat website as you will find excellent info on your 2010. Moderators - HTMLSpiner and Paradox are two great sources for you to tap along with Tideland Prius (Fellow Canadian).

    Congratulations! My car hasn't arrived yet but I have been reading some of the manuals so I'll try to answer some of your questions:

    1. If you can find a screen called General Settings turn Auto Screen Change off.

    2. I think there are a lot of good products available, my present car has leather and I have always used some stuff I got at the furniture store. Probably not the best for cars I'll let someone else answer this one.

    3. Haven't done that yet.

    4. We get the same thing here, I think I'm going to like it.

    5. I was told that when I bought my Gen2 Prius, I threw the thing away.

    Enjoy, I'm anxious to get mine. :)

    Hello and welcome to PriusChat! I'm a few hundred kms north of you. There's another owner in the Calgary area with a Blizzard Pearl too! (Technoratic I think??? too many new Canadian members!)

    1. SETUP --> GENERAL.. and it's somewhere in there I think. The screen menus has changed for the Gen 6 system so i'm not exactly sure where it is.

    2. I just use a leather wipe to ensure it keeps 'moist' and conditioned. I too would like to know if there are better ways of taking care of the leather

    3. Did you follow the instructions for the rolling code?

    4. No. It's a navigation thing. The backup camera in the mirror is a Canadian thing, however. The Americans require the purchase of a navigation system to get a backup camera

    5. Nope. All salesmen will tell you to give them a perfect mark so that they can keep their job. As always, I will fill out the survey as I see fit. Don't expect a perfect if I was treated like crap throughout the buying process. We need to give the good, honest, hardworking salespeople their job and filter out the bad ones.

    Hello, bonjour! Bienvenue à PriusChat! Wow... no Tech Packs til Oct? Well it is a huge jump to the Tech Pack so methinks Toyota Canada is expect 80% of buyers to take up the first 4 packages.

    Nice! I got my blizzard pearl tech package just a couple weeks ago. Hope you enjoy yours as much as I enjoy mine!

    Did you get the dark grey, or the beige interior? Mine is beige, and for the leather, so far I've been using leather wipes that I bought from London Drugs. There may be something better but I haven't bothered to look yet.

    I could not get the garage door opener to program properly either... But then I live in an apartment, so I've nearly given up hope on getting it to work with our gates.

    The salesman also talked to me about the survey, but he didn't say anything about losing his job. What he did say was that he would give me a free service if I gave him all 10's. He was a fairly nice guy and it was a no fuss purchase. Not to mention they managed to get me my car like over a month in advance of what they promised (I was actually considering canceling my order when I got the good news), so I don't see a reason not to.
    From what I understand, Toyota gives out awards to dealerships for service, most cars sold, etc... I assume part of this is decided through the surveys they conduct.

    In regards to the Homelink question, the instructions leave out an important step for first time programming. I found this information on another thread, and it worked for me. (Thanks to 1_mad_scientist, who posted the information. I wasn't quite sure how add a direct quote from another thread without cutting and pasting.)

    Thanks for the suggestion to try homelink.com I was able to enter the vehicle and opener type (Craftsman) and they provided step by step instructions:

    1. For first time training, press and hold the two outer HomeLink buttons, releasing only when the HomeLink indicator light begins to flash after 20 seconds. (Do not perform this step when training the additional HomeLink buttons.)
    2. Hold both the handheld transmitter button and the HomeLink button you would like to program until the HomeLink flashes slowly then rapidly (then release both buttons)
    3. Press and hold the HomeLink button you just programmed. If the garage door opens/closes then programming is complete. If it does not then proceed to step 4.
    4. Get a ladder and press and release the “learn” button on the back of your garage door motor head
    5. Within 30 seconds get back into your vehicle and press end release the HomeLink button you just programmed up to 3 times or until your garage door activates. Programming is complete.
    If you need further assistance, please call HomeLink Customer care at 1-800- 355-3515.


    Toyota left out the part about pressing and holding the two outer buttons the first time the Homelink is programmed! The Craftsman opener did require pressing the learn button at the end of the above procedure.

    I think the key bit of information is pressing and holding the two outer buttons the first time the Homelink is programmed. After I finally saw the lights flashing, the Toyota instructions worked as advertised.

    Pressing and holding the two outer buttons on the Homelink mirror completely erases its memory. It is not required for programming.

    The key item is to repeat the steps of pressing the Learn button on your garage door opener and pressing the Homelink button several times. I think it took about four times before my garage door opener finally responded.

    Actually, I think I repeated the entire sequence several times until it finally worked. Just keep trying and you will eventually get it right.

    I have to disagree with you. I never had to press the Learn button at all. The first couple of times when I tried to program Homelink, I could never get to the point where the lights were flashing, as described. Once I pressed and held the two outside buttons for 20 seconds, the flashing began and I was able to proceed with the directions exactly as described in the manual. It worked for me then on the first try, not after 4 or 5 tries.

    Some people, IraS for example, have reported not needing to take this step on the first programming. My guess is that it was done for them before they received their vehicle, but I don't know that for sure. I do know, however, that using the Learn button on the garage door opener was not necessary for me, and pressing and holding the two outer keys was the key to success.

    To the OP, I'd suggest trying first one, then the other solution. "Your mileage may vary..."

    BTW, I neglected to say, congratulations on your purchase! After you iron out the few questions, I think you're going to be very happy with your new car. I've had mine for about a month now, and this is my favorite car ever.

    Flex, probably the best thing for a salesman to say, and I've had a few who said it this way: "You'll be getting a survey, and if I have not earned the highest marks from you in every category, please let me know so I can correct it before you return the survey, so we can make you completely satisfied."

    Those marks have implications for a host of things, both for the salesman and the dealership. I got the Prius on a Wednesday, a phone call from a dealership rep on Thursday making sure I was completely satisfied, a call from the salesman Friday making sure I was completely satisfied, and a box of cookies from the dealer owner himself on Tuesday, with a letter and his direct phone number, making sure I was completely satisfied. All this before the survey last week. (I was completely satisfied, BTW.)

    As for Homelink programming, I found the first time that 20 seconds wasn't long enough to learn the rolling code from my remote (LiftMaster). This became evident when the opener wasn't acknowledging the additional "remote" when I was up on the ladder performing the learn process.

    The Homelink mirror will "acknowledge" the learning of the remote with the changing of the flashing LED as mentioned in the manual - 20 seconds is a very "rough" estimate.

    For most newer openers, the "learn" function is indeed required. While your mirror may be "cloning" the remote to a point, it's still a unique device that must be authorized by the opener. I'd hate to have one of the much older openers w/ only dip switches and expect my door to be secure :(
