I wanted to know can I have the A/C running while charging.

I tried Hold A/C, it worked once but the other times it hasn’t.

Today, I was charging but I wanted to know how long I had to finish charging while in the car with the windows down, so I pressed the Power button, it said Ignition or “Accessory” on, I could control the A/C, but I don’t know if that is safe or even good to do. It didn’t turn on the car, just the electronics.

Have you tried using Entune to turn in AC on while charging? Assuming your trim level has the feature.

As far as I know, it will not let you use the “remote climate” feature without the doors being locked, the windows up, and the car being “off,” rather than in “ready” or “accessory” modes. I don’t often use the “hold A/C” button in the key FOB, but best I can recall, I think it has the same requirements.

Now of course, here’s the question for O’Toyta: Using the Remote-Climate app to turn on A/C, if it’s not locked or the window le are not up, it says, “no can do, boss” (not a exact quote — haha). Why doesn’t it instead say, “would you like me to lock raise the windows and lock the doors for you?”

Presumably part of the reason is that the window motors are locked out when the car is off, rather than in accessory mode, but they should at least offer to lock the doors for you!

I thought the Remote climate app feature was a part of PRIME Remote App that was specific to 2017-2019 PRIME Advanced trim, and none of 2020 model PRIME has the PRIME Remote App. And IIRC, there was a thread on this topic for the 2017-2019 PRIME (may not be specifically on Advanced trim), about using AC while the traction battery is being charged. My recollection was that you can not keep the AC on for longer than the system allows (around 10 min with remote AC by a fob, or 20 min on ON mode). The conclusion was that since you can not keep the car in READY mode while being charged, there is no way to keep the AC on longer. However, in theory, you could keep repeating this 10 min cycle with remote climate or 20 min on ON mode.

That being said, I would now use ON mode to run AC while charging. I have found the traction battery charging does not charge the 12v battery much. The prolonged ON mode may strain the 12v battery. OTOH, I don't know the effect of using remote climate repeatedly has on the 12v battery health. I would think very similar effect as using AC during ON mode.

2020 Prius Prime on all trims, does not have Remote Climate.

2020 Prius Prime can not be controlled by Entune app or Toyota owner app.

Just to clarify, "Remote Climate" is also the term used for the fob operated functions Toyota calls "Remote Air Conditioning System" which is available on all trims of PRIME including 2020. OTOH, PRIME Remote App was exclusive to 2017-2019 PRIME Advanced model. It is similar to current Remote Connect functionality Toyota offers to many of their line-ups, but 2020 PRIME is not the model supporting the Remote Connect functionality.

Maybe it was depleting the 12v battery. Among other things. :)

What @Salamander_King said. But to further clarify, Remote Climate is available but it's only via the key fob, not the App.

If that is universal problem, I think fob based remote climate would also be discontinued on newer PRIME. It is clear that Toyota deigned the remote climate to be used to prep the cabin temperature while the car is being charged. A shingle 10 min cycle of climate prep to run A/C would probably have minimal effect on the 12v battery. The question is what effect it would have on the 12v battery after repeated use. Toyota may have prepared for this situation since the manual states that the Remote Air Conditioning System stops automatically if the 12v battery becomes low.

Especially since the Gen 3 had Remote A/C on solar-roof-equipped vehicles so Remote A/C has been around for over 10 years.

I'm curious if there's a way to turn ON the ACC from an OFF state while charging. I love being able to sit in my car with the ICE off and AC blowing. Seems like it won't go into a ready state with the charger plugged in though.

They don’t want you putting the car in motion while plugged in.

That totally makes sense. But let us run AC?

The easiest way that I know is to use the remote A/C function. But that only runs 10 mins at a time.

I couldn't get it to run while I was in the car. I left the fob outside the car (one thing that was preventing it) and locked the doors (another thing) and then I would just get generic "remote AC unsuccessful".

You can turn on A/C from the fob or in your case from the phone. But not longer than 10 min. I think you can repeatedly push the fob (or maybe phone app too). I have done it up to 50min (not for cooling but for heat), I don't think there is any limit in number of times you can repeat the remote A/C, but if the charge get completed at any point, then I think your continues remote A/C will not be replenished even if the charge cable remain plugged in.

Oh I kept the fob with me inside the car.

So you sat in the car while it's charging? Locked doors with fob or no? Activated remote AC with fob or app? This is exactly what I'd like to acheive.

Yes. I was charging indoors but it was still muggy so I wanted a bit of cooling after 10 or 15 minutes after the cooled air from my trip dissipated.

I tried both. First time I locked it with the key fob LOCK button then press HOLD A/C.
The second time, I tried just pressing HOLD A/C immediately.

Both worked. Note that I did not open the driver's door in either situation. I believe that will reset the timer (the delay in which you had to wait before activating remote A/C)

I activated it with the fob. We don't have the Prime Apps in Canada.

Hold A/C on fob works for me inside the car. But it is only for 10 minutes. Almost adds 10 more minutes to charge time
