Not surprising, Toyota, which has an r&d budget bigger than the annual net incomes of GM and Ford combined, will get to 40 km/l, or roughly 94 mpg, faster than its pint-sized rival.

According to a report in this week’s Nihon Keizai newspaper, the fourth-generation Toyota Prius gasoline-electric hybrid, due this winter, will be first achieving the milestone.
    Link.

what does 94 mpg on the japanese test equal on the spa? 20% increase would be 60 mpg, and price is supposed to be the same.

it is 10-15 cycle and article implies JC08
The OP 40km/l is in JC08.

Irregardless hybrid Mazda3 gets better ratings then Gen3, and even with current Gen3 based hybrid they will up when they release diesel version

"Irregardless" red flag! ;) Let not this bastardization of English become an everyday part of the vernacular. Sorry, a pet peeve raised its head.

“In its three generations, Prius MPG has improved on average by about 10%, each generation. The challenge to continue to improve at this rate—to beat your own record—becomes very difficult, but makes it all the more motivating. We are very motivated to beat our record.”
    —Satoshi Ogiso

I have faith they will do it. Engineers can be quite competitive when they want ;). Especially if the younger generation wants bragging rights.
