Peugeot are claiming that their new 308 vehicle will be available in hybrid form from as early as Autumn next year (2008).

    http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/news/autoexpr...eugeot_308.html

    Technical details are:

    1.6 HDi diesel engine
    83 mpg (UK) = 70 mpg (US)
    90 g/km CO2
EV mode up to 30 mph
    EV-only switch standard

It's good to see the competition starting! B)

That is an interesting development. Diesel do get better gas milage but (as I understand it) pollute more (cancerogenic and smog producing) particles then gasoline. I'm sure it will be popular in europe!

As cleaner grades of the fuel are finally adopted in the US, diesel emissions will become less of an issue. I am glad to see some competition.

I'll be first in line when clean diesel hybrids are available in the US! Using a new engine like this in a hybrid might be a good idea for Honda:

Hopefully this Peugeot won't be vaporware....

A conventional gearbox? Feh. I'll never give up the smoothness and reliability of Toyota's HSD.

Interesting. The specs sure are impressive. What's the hp/torque? what about acceleration? (kinda wanna know what you with a diesel and an electric motor).

I had a Peugot 505 years back. It was a really nice car, heated leather, all the bells and whistels........ but I didn't even know they still sold Peugots in the USA, do they? And yeah, certainly won't be a PZEV...

diesels are good when they are warm but are terrible polluters when cold and as most of us know its hard to keep the Prius ICE warm in the late fall, winter and spring so what is going to happen with a diesel when it's constantly stopping and starting? A long down grade in winter when it's -25 and this thing will cold knock so bad when it restarts you'll hear it half a mile away.
