So I accidentally had the mechanic put in 5W-30 oil instead of the 0w-20. Now the engine shits off and the hybrid battery was run low trying to run the engine with this thicker oil. Oil was drained, refilled with right oil, and filter changed again after driving just a couple hundred feet in parking lot at the auto shop. It’s getting towed to the dealership. Is it permanently damaged and hopeless or can Toyota technicians fix it? It’s a 2014 Prius v

The oil had nothing to do with the hybrid battery issues you may or may not have. If the mileage is over 150k miles the battery is possibly weak.

There are several other hybrid related issues with this model including the brake booster or inverter. The inverter is one item that would be covered by Toyota even with high miles.

The different oil had nothing to do with anything.
There actually isn't THAT much difference.
0W20 actually might not be the best choice in a HOT environment.

Yeah let your poor mechanic off the hook. Slightly thicker oil was not the culprit.

    Overfilling would really cause damage.

The key word is missing: CAN
    Actual overfilling CAN cause damage.
But your typical "half an inch" or less above the full mark doesn't really qualify.

It could have been empty for that long without serious damage. The difference between the oil used versus spec is insignificant.

Good deal. I would suggest finding an independent hybrid shop in the Socal area you can use for oil changes and other maintenance work as it comes up. You may hear from a group of old guys here that diy is the way to go. I don't subscribe to that as a general rule especially without some level of experience. But establishing a relationship with an independent shop will save you money on most regular maintenance items and is more likely to give you a balanced opinion on some optional items you are sure to hear about.
