    Just had my first service done (5000 mile) at Putnam Toyota in Burlingame, CA. Total cost was $89 and dealer performed oil change, other items listed in service manual and also rotate my tires. I expected my every 5000 mile cost to be closer to $40 (cost of just oil change), but was not upset that dealer recommended rotating tires.

    What have you paid for 5000 mile service and what did that cost cover?

    thanks,

    I paid $64.95 + $24.95 extra for Mobil 1 synthetic from Frontier Toyota. I won't be going back.

    Summary of charges:
    Service Special Adjustment = .37 (must have been when they slapped a plastic number magnet on my roof, scratching through the wax and maybe the clear coat)
    Parts = 31.34
    Gas-Oil-Grease = 8.25
    Hazardous Waste Chg = 1.21
    Lab-Mechanical = 49.95
    Tax = 3.30
    Total = $94.41

    They set my tires to 32psi (dumb-asses!) They charged me for that?
    Rotated tires
    Lub chassis
    Re-torque Drive Shaft Flange Bolts (Sienna)
    Top Off Fluid Levels
    Complete Vehicle Inspection

    I have one small question where did they lube the chassis? I would challenge them on that. That is a generic list. If they did not do the work they do not get the bucks. Your Attorney General's office may be interested in such things.

    Alot of Toyota dealers have the express lube (not sure the offical name of it) that includes oil change and 25 point check. Those 25 points usually cover everything that needs to be checked on the Prius. For rotating tires, anybody can do it.
    I got my 15k mile service last week. With the coupon of $21.95 for express lube. I brought in my own oil and filter (Mobil 1 syn and Purolator), they deducted the bill to $19.95. The service writer said that's the lowest price they can go. The service writer also recommended tire rotation and the final cost will be around $40. I said no thanks. Then I rotate my tires at a tire shop for $10.

    Is tire rotation really necessary at 5,000 miles? I just got the oil changed for the first time at the dealer, which was $29. Tire rotation would have been another $40 and I was skeptical so I didn't get it done. "Do I have to do that now?" I asked, and the service guy said no.

    According to the schedule maintenance booklet, it stated rotating tires with every oil change. Of course you don't have to follow that, and other ppl on PC said they don't follow 5000 mile tire rotation. But if your tires wear out prematurely, then it is ur problem. Just make sure you check the tread depths or have the tech check that. From the 25 point check report, it show that the treads on front tires is less than the rear tires.

    I got my first oil change at the Toyota dealer at 5,000 miles for free with a coupon. They wanted money for a tire rotation but I decided to leave it until 10,000 miles.

    I got my second oil change plus tire rotation and inspection at Midas for $29.00. I don't know what kind of oil they used and I am not concerned about it either.

    Total cost for maintenance in 10,000 miles has been $29.00 plus tax so far.

    I would absolutely rotate every 5K miles. The Prius is hard on front tires.

    In addition, I would cross rotate about every 10K, because it's particularly hard on right front tires. There are two in my parking lot at work where the right side tires are much more worn than the lefts.

    I am looking forward to servicing Toyotas. 'Most' Toyota owners bring in their vehicle and will do whatever is recommended to them(I am talking about honest preventive maintenance, not gouging). At my stores(all domestic) about half the time if anything other than an oil change or tire rotation is recommended the customer goes ballistic. This has been a huge historic difference in customer bases. It is also a reason that Toyota's service satisfaction is faltering so much. When that customer brings in their Camry for the 30k maintenance and the Toyota dealer recommends a $5-800 bill the customer compares that to the $21 oil change they consistently did on their Impala and is not very happy.

    I purchase Mobil 1 by the case on sale (ca. $3.50 per Liter) at Costco or Kragen (Toyota dealer charges $10 per Liter!). A 5000 mi service uses almost four Liters. 4 • $3.50 = $14.00. I change my own oil and recycle the used oil. Satisfaction of doing my own simple service: priceless.

    Do you mean by "cross rotating" putting them on the other side of the car? I have been told that you shouldn't put radial ply tires that have been run for several thousand miles on the other side of the car and run them in the opposite direction. The reason for this, as explained to me, is that the radial plys, which run 90 degrees to the rim, take a set of a degree or so when they are run for a while. When you force them to rotate in the other direction the plys try to move and take a set the other way, this supposedly causes some stress and heat buildup in the tire. I would submitt as evidence the fact the in every case I know of automotive and tire manufacturers recommend keeping radial ply tires on the same side of the vehicle when rotating them.

    Is this no longer true? or has it ever been true?

    EDIT: I did a little more research on this, if you are interested see my later post.

    Don't know the answer but my dealer included tires fro the life of the car if I let them do all the recommended maintence. The first oil change is on them at 2500 miles. After that I'm on the regular schedule and they'll be rotating the tires every 5k.

    My dealer has a "first oil change free" policy, but charged about $20 to rotate the tires! As noted in the thread, a bit pricey for movin' some tires around.

    On the other issue raised in the thread, my understanding is that the crossover rotation is the recommended pattern. I too thought you shouldn't cross radials, but I guess the rules have changed.

    I did the 15,000 mile oil change mysef for the first time. This is the easiest car I've ever done myself. I have aftermarket tires from Les Schwab (Toyo Proxies) so I go there for free rotations.

    I too had always been told not to crossrotate radial tires but now as you said, it appears the rules have changed. At least according to some.

    The Toyota Prius Owner's Manual page 295 "The wheel assemblies must be rotated as illustrated above." The illustration shows rotating them front to back on the same side of the car.

    The Goodyear Limited Warranty pamphlet that comes with the car says "Rotate your tires according to your vehicle manufacturer's recommendations or at maximum intervals of 6000 miles/10,000 km." In this pamphlet Goodyear does not try to tell you how to rotate the tires.

    I just got off the phone with two local tire dealers one Goodyear and one other (Les Schwab) they both told me it was OK to cross rotate them from one side to the other.

    I have now done 4 oil changes and tire rotations as well as checking all fluids. No lubrication done as there are no grease nipples. All parts bought at Walmart. Oil: less than $1.00 a qt. and filter at $2.03 X 4 = > $20.00. Odometer now at 23000.

    When I asked my dealer about changing my own oil (which I've done on all my cars), he said you must take it to a dealer for oil changes, you can't do it yourself. How hard is it to change the oil and filter?

    My 5,000 mile service came with the purchase price, so I had it done, while I watched and asked questions. They did the recommended front to back, same side rotation. I didn't watch the second service (10,000), but was somewhat annoyed that I was charged for the full service, even though they noted that they had not done the tire rotation, because the fronts had more tread depth than the rears.

    This suggests that the rotation is not mandatory, but the measurement of tread depth is . I have done all my own, since, and the work is worth at least $20, if they do the brake lining and tire measurement as recommended. I just like to see for myself, since I have a hard time trusting dealers to record reliably what they have done. :(

    If you DIY, keep records of date and odometer of the work and receipts for purchase of oil, filter, etc.
