I have driven as many as 63 miles after the DTE reached zero. 95 miles after the gas light illuminated.

How impressive! Just got mine last Thursday and its first real workout was yesterday. Drove 67 miles mixed hwy/city with AC on for the duration. 30 of those miles were spent following a non-hybrid vehicle late for an appointment, so needless to say I had to hammer it pretty hard to keep up. Arrived home averaging 67 mpg, oddly enough burning exactly one gallon of fuel for the trip.

163 total miles to date and the fuel gauge has yet to move. Can't imagine what mileage I'll get once it's broken in and I know how to drive it.

Could that make the in-tank fuel pump gasp for fuel and maybe get damaged? Fuel pump is in the tank isn't it?

Agreed, I reckon it's tempting fate - having had to pay big money to fix a car which had run out of fuel (old VOLVO, but I have a friend who had the same problem with a brand new Nissan). Maybe OK on a brand new car - not sure what effect it has on the battery either - or does the car just cut out altogether without fuel?

Mr.MPG, outstanding numbers! Can you describe for us exactly what the traffic conditions were like? Were you on the Freeway? City streets? And what kind of speed you were driving?

And what is "DTE"? Digital Tank Expiration?

DTE is distance to empty. Seems that our cars have at least one gallon of gas in reserve past that notification.

You've set the bar pretty high for an 800 mile tank. :) 78.6 mpg will be very hard to beat.

(I wish the Prius had a 15 gallon tank. That would be perfect. Who needs a back seat?! :ROFLMAO:)

Congrats great mileage. I find my CT200h does good in bumper to bumper traffic... about 50-55mpg if I am gentle. But moderate city driving (50mph speed limits with lots of traffic lights in between) i get around 35mpg. So not all "city" or "traffic" driving is equal, I've found.

That's actually the EU rating for the Prius. It seems the EU test is not that "out of reality" at all :D
