    hey all,

i'm due for my 35k mile service. i was looking at the warranty / service guide and all it says is:

    • Check installation of driver’s floor mat
    • Inspect and adjust all fluid levels
    • Rotate tires
    • Visually inspect brake linings/drums and brake pads/discs

is there any need to get this done by the dealer? i don't see what they are doing that would require a 'real service' aside from looking at a few things and charging me money :p i can rotate the tires for free at a company nearby...

if i choose to skip this service, how do i 'record it' so that it doesn't void my warranty? :) thanks!

At this site you will find all the service history Toyota dealers have done. You can also add service history done elsewhere.

You never have to go to a Toyota dealer, except for recalls, I recommend them for brake work, as Prius brake logic is complex.

Does the service need to be done by an actual shop or is doing it yourself good enough as a record? I just don't want to run into any kind of warranty issues. Thanks!

Now you are asking a legal question without telling us where you are. If you are in the US, they would have to show that you caused the failure. No idea what the law is where you are.

(Every question has better answers if we know where you are)

I stay clear of the stealerships. If my car is working correctly I have my oil changes done at oil can henrys, tires at costco, ect.., if I have a problem then I will take it to toyota. My wife was going to take our camry in for 30k service and it was several hunderd $, the service schedule indicates do oil change and check fluid levels, change cabin air filter and the engine air filter, I changed these filter in less than 5 min and a local parts store and the oil change was about $35. My experiance at dealerships is they always try to get you to spend more money. they reccomend doing things that are not needed. IMO

I'm in Illinois. I'm just not familiar with how warranty stuff works if you don't bring it to the dealership. It sounds like the 35k mile service is really just looking at stuff... :p aside from the tire rotation.

Most routine visits are just inspections.

I've had the same dilemma. If I ever had a warranty issue, do they just assume you know what you are doing if you DIY'd? Or are they going to press you for "credentials" for why you can do a competent inspection?

Interesting - I just called my Toyota dealership and asked about the 35k mile service. They said all they do is a tire rotation at that time, so there's no point to bring it in if I can get it rotated for free elsewhere.
