Yesterday I got my 25000 mile service at the dealership the last free one. They mentioned that the 30000 mile service would cost about $300 bucks!!!! if all I need is an oil change and tire rotation why would that be? Is there anything else I should be having done or are they just doing things that are unnecessary?

Your Warranty and Maintenance Guide shows what Toyota requires. The more substantial items are:

    Tire rotation *
    Oil and filter change
    Replace engine air filter **
    Replace cabin air filter **
    Brake inspection ***

    * This is not a trivial task. Obviously with a lift and air tools it's a lot easier, but...
** You could reduce the bill if you take charge of the filter inspection and/or replacement chore yourself, it's very easy. If the filters are in pretty good shape, I'd just blow them out and re-install. Dealerships probably lean towards more frequent replacement, especially since Toyota spec's it.
*** This is the more involved brake inspection, including check of brake pad thickness and disc thickness/runout. If they do it properly they will relube the caliper pins too.

how would they know to relube the pins, do they have a manual that goes beyond what you've posted?

The repair manual exploded view shows the pins and indicates a (very generic) lube description. Really what it lacks is specific instruction. Honda's better in this regard.

It is kinda brake maintenance 101 tho.

I find it hard to believe that they lube the brake pins since it is not called for in the maintenance schedule. And, that would be another 5 minutes of work to release the bolts.
Then they might charge $500 LOL

    Brad K,
The service required is trivial. Do it yourself. Or if you really, really hate wrenches or are infirm then pay ~ $10 to have the tyres rotated at Walmart, ~ 50 for an oil change, and replace the cabin and engine filters yourself. Walmart charges $20 for an oil change. You could call ahead and ask it they mind if you supply the oil and filter of your choice. 4 qts of superb oil costs about $20 at Walmart, and the engine oil filter at the Toyota dealer parts desk is somewhere around $6. If you are paranoid over keeping your new car warranty, keep the receipts of the parts.

So between parts and someone else's labor you will pay around $60. In any case though, check your oil level after the maintenance, after a short drive, and a day or two later. Mistakes happen no matter who works on the car or how much you pay.

if you're going to keep the car a long time, you may want to consider a tranny fluid change.

perhaps the dealer likes to replace the flux capacitor every 30k.

to keep my lifetime warranty, it probably would be best to have the delership perfomr the service. if I have the dealship do the oil, tire rotate and filters, how much should that cost?

Not required in the least in the TFS warranty, and in general not legal. Your specific warranty may have provisions to be aware of, but if the deal is required dealer maintenance in return for warranty it is a lousy, lousy, warranty.

One of several myths the dealerships don't go out of their way to dispel.

I was just browsing through our old '86 Accord Owners Manual. It had instruction for:

    Oil and Filter Change
Transmission Fluid Change (manual and automatic)
    Spark Plug Change
    Coolant Change
    Serpentine Belt Adjustment

Yep, although I think you meant to write myth rather than rumor.

I believe it says any Toyota Certified person can do it and I must maintain the records. Not sure if that applies to filters?

Then you are the owner of a crap warranty. Throw it in the trash and do your own maintenance.

It is not really a warranty -- it is a marketing ploy.

About $15 USD if you are frugal, $25 if you are normal.
$350 - $500 if just have to have a dealership donut.
