I set my OBD2 app to display horsepower output. I put my car in sport mode and floored the pedal.
At its peak, it reached just over 300 hp. Gotta be something wrong, right?

    What's the app?

In another thread recently there was a screenshot posted from (was it Hybrid Assistant?) where the numbers left me not entirely sure of the math they were doing.

It will take me a while to figure out how to take a movie of it.
    Can't you just believe me?

I'm old enough to remember when Prius MDFs exaggerated their MPG numbers.......

    Aren't you a little long-in-the-tooth for full-throttle antics, Paul?

Might be a misreading of the power combination. Engine power is 152hp. MG2 power is 163hp.

At full throttle, you could be seeing nearly that much power coming from both of those to get a total of 300hp.

But it's not real power to the wheels, as you'd be double-counting - at high engine revs and lower speed, a lot of the engine power (possibly over half from the maths on this thread) will be captured by MG1 to power MG2.

But that should be shown in a nomograph type display as a negative power from MG1, and it should be subtracted to get the net wheel power.

Or it could be that the display needs (re)calibrating for the G5. I don't know if the raw OBD data has nice standard kW-based units, or an arbitrary scale that varies from vehicle to vehicle.

    FACTORY Brake HP is 196.
You 'may' find the rare example that will crack 200 when the temps are between 45 and 60 degrees, with a barometer reading over 1010 millibars and a physical altitude of under 300'.

I think we're talking about the PHEV, so we're looking for a peak of 223 net.

It will never stop being fun.

It's not a dynamometer after all. It calculates estimated HP by using torque.
That's what it says in the documentation, anyhow.

Precisely. I was going to ask if there was an age limit for that. If so, I'm not there yet.

Does the HA documentation say that they follow the method of that Ford Global patent? I didn't read it that closely.

It would still be a separate matter, even if they had a clear specification to follow, whether their code implements it without mistakes.

The author of the topic does not provide any data on what application was used, as well as any report or photo with data. For now, we can guess about the coffee grounds and discuss the situation of yesterday's alien landing in the state of Nebraska.

Not in this thread perhaps, but in a different thread he did post four days ago about having Hybrid Assistant installed.

I remembered that because it was before I got distracted by the aliens.

Android app called Car Scanner (paid version).
I never got Hybrid Assistant to work. It always stalls on "OBD Initialization" and then disconnects.

Well if it estimates hp from torque and you got the instant torque from the electric motor (not sure if it accounts for the reduction gear output), then it's likely off. It's probably meant for ICE cars rather than hybrids.

On setup, I had to pick from a long list of make and model.
It had a profile for the Prius Prime.

I understand. But you said the app's manual or instruction said it's an estimation rather than a direct calculation or data mine from the car.

I'm not enough of an engineer to understand it.
