Should I be concerned? I've never seen this much fuel in an oil sample in any car I've owned including PHEV's at this mileage. I drive 40 miles a day on with the shortest trip door to door being 10 miles. 90% highway driving and not in bumper to bumper traffic ever. I will share the next oil sample at 5k miles once I do the next oil change. Thoughts? Prius_blackstone.PNG

It is a direct-injection engine; so, it is more prone to fuel dilution. 10 miles is still on the short side for HEVs/PHEVs. Doing longer trips will greatly help with fuel dilution if that is possible.

What's your ICE to EV ratio?
    Is this a Prime?
If your shutting down, just as the engine is warming up, at either end of your commute, it doesn't get hot enough to bake the fuel out of the oil, and it's a direct inject engine.

These p h e v's y'all are talking about here are still 2ZFXE engines . My 2013 when it was running has that smell too always smell gas in the oil more so than many other Toyota engines that I remember 22R 3sge 2 and 3T series motors none of them smell like the two ZZ I do notice this quite a bit direct injection or not generally ours are driven until they're warmed up right smartly but both of the generation 3's here smell like this all the time The twos not so much but the two Z engine yes very noticeable I've never done any testing or sent oil off to labs but I'm glad somebody did just a confirmation for me.

It says a Prius HEV in OP's avatar.

A Prius Prime PHEV would have been a lot easier to mitigate the fuel dilution with, as you can eliminate short trips altogether by only using the BEV mode for short trips.

Gen5 does not use the 2ZR-FXE in the US or Canada. It uses the M20A-FXS.

You've been corrected on this before. Why do you keep repeating completely wrong info?

That's even worse so a newer engine is doing this too Great sounds like a winner I don't know if I've been corrected on this before or not I didn't even see the year model but anyway that's good or that's bad for you or whatever you want to say Not cool I would think engines would get tighter as they get more modern or what have you thanks for that.

My bad Yes this is the new open deck with both fuel injection types on it and all that that can't be rebuilt I feel bad for people jumping into this. nice

The Prius isn't the only Toyota using a Dual Force Engine. The Camry has gone entire generation with one. Has fuel in the oil been a problem with other models.

But not all Camrys are hybrids.

GDI and HEV will both contribute to more fuel dilution.

However, the oil in an HEV will run cooler and thicker, making up for fuel dilution to some extent.

I’m lost on GDI, something Dual Injection?

Fast an’ furious acronyms are hard on the head.

These are the engines at Kia and Hyundai are having so much trouble with can't keep them in a vehicle The engine that is. Once you get to a certain point there's a crossover between reliability maximum gas mileage extraction and owner experience.

Gasoline direct injection (GDI) and turbo gasoline direct injection (TGDI). The latter is also susceptible to LSPI (low-speed preignition) in high-BMEP (brake mean effective pressure) engines. Both are also susceptible to high gasoline particulate emissions.

It is all acronyms out there.

LoL, first time I was dragged into a director's meeting - they referred to me as the SME. I had to ask my boss after the meeting, "What the heck is a SME". Subject Matter Expert - At that point I realize that upper management uses acronyms to make us feel small and make us think they know what the they are talking about....:p:LOL::ROFLMAO::sleep::whistle:

Yeah I used to have a hybrid; now it's a HEV.

Some of these acronyms such as GDI, TGDI, LSPI, and BMEP are industry-standard, and you are expected to learn them if you are studying the field. Others such as HSD, PSD, etc. are created by OEMs, and they are not industry-standard.

Toyota uses EV and HV (modes) on the buttons and displays in the car. These terms are actually not correct because the hybrid mode is still an EV mode and the EV mode could also be a hybrid mode. More accurate terms would be BEV and HEV (modes). Nevertheless, for obvious reasons, there is no confusion, even though the terms/acronyms are incorrect.

Hi! The presence of fuel in the oil sample is concerning, especially at this mileage and driving conditions. Fuel dilution can lead to increased oil degradation and potential engine damage over time. While PHEV's may experience some fuel dilution due to their design, the level you're seeing is unusual. I'd recommend closely monitoring the situation, using high-quality oils, and considering more frequent oil changes until the root cause is determined.

Those Priuses certainly are good candidates to receive 5k miles OCI's..perhaps even more frequently during winter. They don't seems to get up to temps easily and then destroy oil because of fuel/water dilution even at low milleage... see those 2 examples. My own Gen 5 Prime and my dad's Signature Mazda CX5 with the turbo Skyactiv engine. (A gem on an engine honestly!)

Pictured here is the oil that came out of my Gen 5 after 10k km of mild winter use..
    Screenshot_20240521_185318_Messenger.jpg

Compared to what came out of the Turbo CX5 after about the same period but with a 8k OCI.
    20240611_115139.jpg

The oil that came out of the Prius was full of humidity/fuel because the engine won't ever get up to temps because it's cycling on and off.. even though it was a 10k km OCI, in reality, the gas engine maybe ran for about 3k out of those 10k km. You can see the oil is still dark amber/golden-ish even if it looks like i was mixing 2 differents paint colors... if it wasn't for the humidity/fuel in it, i bet it was perfectly fine oil still.. the CX5 however, the oil is old and definitely spent but you can see it's "clean" and not cloudy at all. Hell, it's a mirror and you can see my face in it! That car does trips that rarely go under 25km at a time and is remote started about 5 minutes before a trip when cold outside. Motor oil wise, dad's CX5 if motor oil paradise and my Prime is hell on earth..

    ..new tech, new challenges...
