Tata Motors today took the covers off the world’s cheapest car — the Nano.
Over the past year, Tata has been building hype for a car that would cost a mere 100,000 rupees (roughly $2,500) and bring automotive transportation to the mainstream Indian population. It has been nicknamed the “People’s Car.†Over the course of the New Delhi Auto Expo, which began this week, anticipation had grown to fever pitch.

    Uhhh...what bad joke? ;)

You're right, gas consumption can only go up with more vehicles. If, and it's a big if, this new vehicle replaces less efficient and dirtier scooters, in theory oil demand and pollution would go down.

I wonder how easy it would be to convert that to an EV?

Keep in mind, they built this car with this philosophy - "Do we really need that?"

hence one wiper, no passenger door mirror, no A/C, radio, etc.

I'm surprised it even has 2 headlights.

Think of this as a scooter that can fit four and has a roof. That's pretty much it.

For those that have to ride scooters, it's a huge upgrade. (esp. since there's more standing room in the Nano than a scooter :p)

When you give up your car then and only then will you be in a position to say Indians shouldn't have cars without being a hypocrite.

    Good on em I reckon.
These will likely compete with a Royal Enfield and a sidecar. They have an an extra seat and more safety, just.

Comments on the news from environmentalists and some others were that they are NOT happy about this car suggesting that congestion in Asia/India's larger cities is already terrible with resultant pollution/smog, etc. will get much worse with so many more people crowding the roads now that they're able to afford cars when previously they would walk or ride bikes.
Makes sense I guess, but it's still pretty cool that they can produce something for this price. I haven't seen the safety specs, but you've gotta believe the price will rise significantly when they try to market in the US by the time they add all the necessary safety features and such.

Although I disagree with Patsparks on most issues, on this I concur with you Pat.

I too feel it is extremely hypocritical and immature of those to lament how such a car will increase congestion, pollution, etc. while the rest of us drive cars and essentially live in a way that perhaps the average person from India could never dream of EVER attaining.

The true colors (me, me, me, and screw the rest of you...) of those making such posts do show. Yea, "let them eat cake..."

As usual I try to see a middle ground. Usually things in this world are kept in moderation by the factors of supply and demand and cost...that balance is being tipped here and it could be to the detriment of everyone.
But yea, it's great that the average person will have more ability to buy and use a car...

The BBC World Service has been reporting on this for the last day or so and there has been some pretty good commentary. One individual (I believe associated with Indian environmental interests?) made the very effective insinuation that it's because of us that they want this thing in the first place. Many Indians look to the West as a model for their own standard of living and, predictably, a family automobile is one of the major indicator that "you have arrived." (Not to mention the fact that many families pack themselves onto scooters and motorcycles, which isn't exactly safe.)

Considering that they generally don't eat beef(a huge oil suck on the earth), the average indian probably won't even come close to the oil consumption compared to your typical 3 cheeseburger eating/day, SUV driving, overweight american.

It's a keicar, and a budget keicar at that.

Keep in mind that the skilled Indian worker needs two years to afford a Nano.

When I first heard the name, I thought, "What, Tata is now making mp3 players?". (galaxee, this could be the bad joke you were referring to).

Anyway, although the Nano will increase pollution and other issues, I am glad Tata came out with something like this. Good for them. Also, it's not cheap at all to most Indians to afford something at Rs. 100,000. Although this might serve as a good taxi service like the three-wheeler they have (called the tuk-tuk).

I am wondering when Sri Lanka is going to import it.

There were reports of it getting 5L/100km too.

    5L/100km = 47 US MPG = 56.5 UK MPG

Those numbers are meaningless if you don't know the testing cycle. Tata Nano's top speed is 43 MPH so there is no way these MPGs are comparable with US and UK test cycles. Prius below 43 MPH can easily get 70+ MPG without P&G.

I am not trying bad mouth Tata Nano but pointing out the absolute advantage HSD has over conventional single engine car. Just compare and contract how much sacrafice you'll need to make to get Prius comparable MPGs.

That's not so far behind. My first car out of college was an old '65 bug, no A/C, radio, passenger-side mirror, safety equipment, etc. My next car was a '87 Sentra, this time with A/C and radio but no passenger-side mirror, power steering, power brakes, power windows, or power locks.
It wasn't until '96 that I entered the "modern age" with a passenger-side mirror and power steering and airbags. But now, with the Prius, I feel like I'm ahead of the technology curve for once.

It'll be replacing the scooters so oil consumption should be the same (given that it gets slightly better mpg than scooters plus given some leeway for new owners that never had a scooter before). Plus pollution will be lower cause I believe it has a cat converter.. unlike the scooters.
