Oh darn, we'll have to buy cars in the USA in order to not pay tariffs (or, purchase used). Boohoo. Don't see anyone's hair on fire when usa manufacturers face tariffs on exporting to the Japanese.

 

Cause there are no tariffs on US car imports to Japan.

There was a time when most of the USA lived on farms. Then December 7th 1941 changed everything. Stuff ramped up pretty quick considering the amount of industrialization going on back then.

Moving to 100% would take time. There won't be any pressure along the lines of a war to speed things up. Fast build costs more to do. The costs of doing it in the US are also still there. There may not be a profit motive to move production and sources over just paying the tariffs.

 

Japanese culture was imperialist for a few thousand years before the USA came along. The British and Romans were pretty good at it too.

Well, that could be a problem. There's going to be a whole bunch of cars that are 70% finished. Nobody's going to buy those, and nobody's going to keep making more. Lots of people will be out of work, in Mexico, Canada, and the US. This isn't good for anybody.

 

Then perhaps it's time to start making things over here, stop other nations from charging us tariffs and restricting what products we can sell to them on their side. YMMV
