Just purchased a 2021 XLE and am enjoying learning all the new tech. As I researched this vehicle I ran across some articles concerning thefts of the Prius catalytic converter. I wasn't sure if it was hype or marketing strategy from the "catsecurity" firm that seems to be behind a lot of the articles. Is this a real problem? Seems like the articles go way back, is it more of a problem for older Prius'? Has Toyota done anything to prevent this on newer models?

Welcome to PriusChat. We're a friendly bunch here, with several amazing minds that can answer virtually any question you have!!

You can find a few threads on the catalytic converter theft subject, using the search function: search for "catalytic convertor", scroll down to Prius Gen 4. Plenty of info for you.

I don't know if the 2021 Prius has changed the exhaust routing. Someone else can chime in.

The first cat is tucked way up in the well. The one that is usually stolen is the second cat. There are some aftermarket plates that can be bolted on to help prevent theft of that cat.

But a determined thief will still find a way to steal it. There have been reports of thieves stealing the hybrid battery pack. It's not pretty. They cut all connections with a wire cutter and make off with the pack.

Just make sure you have good insurance.

Do a search (Use GOOGLE with PriusChat in the query) - and you'll find that this has been discussed extensively.

As far as I can recollect, there have been no reports (on PriusChat) of Gen 4 being attacked - yet. The first one is near impossible to get to.

We were warning Gen1 and gen2 owners only at our shop. Now the threes and 4s are getting hit. Just in the past two weeks.

It’s all a matter of desperation. In Portland it’s also a complete lack of fear. Our cops are busy with protests and the thieves know it.

Eventually every prius cat in the US will be stolen. Just a matter of time imho.

There a aftermarket metal shield you can buy to add on, although pretty pricy . Not something I would pull the trigger on personally, Park somewhere where it isn't shady.

Whoa there! A bit of hyperbole here???

I don't know about YOUR region, but I'm never even slightly concerned about a Prius cat theft.

I'd second insurance: brand new car too. Make sure you have reasonably low deductible coverage for vandalism. I believe the term is "comprehensive".

This is covered by comprehensive. Would also ask the insurer about a little box that says “OEM Parts coverage” then you only get toyota parts and its very little extra premium. 17 towed in no cats last week
