And here it is, new Camry:
Green Car Congress: Eighth generation Toyota Camry makes its debut in Detroit

In addition to its enhanced handling and driving performance, the hybrid version of the new Camry is anticipated to achieve best-in-class fuel economy ratings, with Prius-like city/highway driving efficiency.
Looks like they are aiming high.

And here is more about the New Camry:
Ante Raised: All-New 2018 Toyota Camry Gains Emotionally-Charged Design and Performance Experience | Toyota USA Newsroom

First impression: Hybrid system sounds interesting with more electric boost and "simulated 6-speed sequential shift transmission" in Sport mode. "The hybrid version of the new Camry is anticipated to achieve best-in-class fuel economy ratings, with Prius-like city/highway driving efficiency". Also, the hybrid has a much bigger, wider grille, much of it fake, than the sporty non hybrid. The brilliant Toyota stylists at work.

Bravo Toyota. I didn't think you could do worse than the hourglass black, hex grid grill.

Which one is the hybrid? The one with the Mirai side air intakes, or the one with the wrap around chrome billets.

Actually, looking at the Detroit Auto Show Camry Intro Video (available at Toyota ), it looks like the Sport models will have the Mirai like side (fake) air intakes while the non sport non hybrid and the hybrid models will have the wide one piece grille. Styling aside, I am looking forward to learning more about the hybrid drive train and what the EPA figures will be.

    Aaaaaaaaaargh.

    Why.

At least they didn't make it do that in normal mode, only sport mode... and I also wonder how much of the electric power boost is merely torque filling to make up for the engine dipping below optimum RPM.

It is a game to distract the driver from how the car truly works. <wink>

It is a software illusion, a fake.

Can't imagine why they engineer a silk-smooth CVT and then back engineer in hiccups they call gears . . . (n)

It's just software. No one said you have to use it. Leave it in D and it'll drive like the old TCH.

But just like the ECO, normal, PWR mode, the D vs. S gives people choice.

I think this is also the debut for a North American Toyota using VVT-iE (first debut on the 2006 LS460 IIRC).

    No EPA astonishing MPGs yet?
Hyundai had it quicker for the upcoming Ioniq!

If the new HyCam gets Gen 3 Prius like fuel economy, so much for the Prius to ever regain it's past sales numbers... I like the new Camry look, if you want a more boring conservative style, wait for an updated Avalon.

Oh yes, but current 4 Gen Prius is a step more efficient...

Because many buyers actually like the feel of stepped transmissions. Virtually gears on a CVT have been around for several years now because of that. I personally don't care one way or the other, and do find virtual gears on a CVT silly, but the object of the game is to sell cars.

Not going by the sales numbers.

..into the realm of diminishing returns. Upgrading an ICE Camry or Rav4 to the hybrid model will save a lot more gas than upgrading a gen3 Prius to a gen4, and going into a hybrid version of a familiar ICE model will be easier for many than going to a Prius.

A hybrid Camry may well cost more than a Prii, so a Prii may still be easier to digest

A HyCam is worth the extra cost as a larger and more comfortable family hauler, with a lot more power than a Prius as well. If you just need an efficient commuter car though, the Prius can't be beat...

Above is why I don't think comparing an efficient orange to an efficient apple means that everyone will move to oranges.

Cross segment shopping doesn't happen much.

hycam and prius prices aren't far apart, unless you go for a prime with the tax credits.
