My left-side headlamp began flickering and intermittently going dark this past November. When it goes dark it triggers the check engine light. When I turn the headlights off the error code seems to reset.

Beginning in March the check engine light comes on every time the headlights are turned on.

I took it to our dealership to get some idea of what was wrong.

On 8 March 2025 the dealership says that I need to replace the headlight assembly and its computer. The assembly costs $1700 and the computer $200. With projected labor fees the total cost will be $2700.

For a failing head light, or I assume a loose connection [since it has been an intermittent failure]. This appears to be an extremely out of proportion remedy.

This is how Toyota has evolved. Even gen 2 had some messed up lights iirc.
It’s likely that all manufacturers are following this model to keep manufacturing costs down.

IMHO; at that price I'd start looking online for a left headlamp assembly and replace it yourself. Re: the computer; is that integrated into that headlamp or does it control both? While it's just $200 bucks, you may be able to find one and try replacing that first?

    Good Luck.
