Hello everyone I recently bought my Prius Three touring & The OEM tire is the 215/45R17. I was wondering would I have to get the same 17inch tire to go with the oem alloy rims. Can I buy a 15 inch winter tire or does it have to be 17inch? The 15 inch is way cheaper but I would probably need a new rim for the 15inch tire. It's either going to be ws80 or the Michelin x Ice 3? Decisions
You can go safely to 15 inch 195/65/15 size snow tires with dedicated 15" wheels. But you do have to purchase separate 15" wheels to do that. That size is OEM on other trims of PRIUS. That's exactly what I did on my SUV that came with larger wheels and tires. As for the tire selection, Xi3 is very quiet yet super capable on NE snow on my previous Gen3 and now on PRIME. I don't have experience with Blizzak, but I read it is better on deeper snow but shorter tread life. They now have a new WS90 out, so older WS80 is priced to sell. Read @Rob43 thread on tire and wheel selection. GET YOUR DEDICATED SNOW TIRES NOW !!! | PriusChat It's on the PRIME forum, but it applies to Gen4 (or Gen3) as well.
Our stock tires are 215/65R15 size (Canadian 2010 Touring), but for snow tires I got 195/65R15 (on Corolla steel rims), no problems. When I got the rims they were $70 apiece. I got a package deal through dealership, everything went smoothly. No TPMS sensors btw. The rims seem to have gone up in price recently, but check with dealership, doesn't hurt: Corolla steel rim, part no: 42611-02471 (2003-2008 corolla or matrix, CE, LS, S) steel rim lug nuts, part no: 90942-01007 (plain, open-ended, galvanized)
