    Hello!
Looking for advice / suggestions. I have a 2016. Got sticker and was informed license plate light was out. Manual said see dealer. They told me it has two bulbs in sealed assemblies and would cost $375 to have installed. No idea how these guys keep a straight face! Novocaine injections to the cheeks?? They ought to just make the whole car a sealed assembly and when a dome light goes out, make you buy a new car. Anyway, no interest in paying this. I got the impression that perhaps some gen 4s...perhaps even other 2016's did not have a sealed LED assembly. Got this impression the way he emphasized my particular model/ date. ...but really not sure. Hoping for some ideas...thanks!!

Check on Amayama. You need to verify your "frame" number, and if you can get past that hurdle, you'll find the assemblies. For me I'm seeing $97 and $26 plus change, CDN. Just for ref, not sure about frame number:
Rear license plate lamp for Toyota Prius ZVW50L - Auto parts - Amayama

This might at least give you some part numbers to hunt for, more local. But Amayama's often the best deal, even with shipping. (and not extras, tax, duty)

Taking one of the above part numbers, see a pretty good deal through toyota USA parts:

    License Plate Lamp Assembly #81270-33110 | Autoparts.toyota.com

    ($31.17 USD, suggested retail)

Sounds like a pretty steep labour charge, that quote you got.

A healthy amount of that price is labor. According to a lookup on Olathe Toyota, there are 2 possible part numbers.
81204-47010 License Lamp Assembly lists for $138.20 but Olathe has it for $113.32
2016-2022 Toyota License Lmp Assembly 81204-47010 | Toyota Parts Center

81270-33110 License Lamp lista for $31.17 and Olathe has it for $27.12 This part is included in the above assembly.

Info from Repair Manual attached. The light swap itself seems trivial, but you apparently need to first remove "back door outside garnish". There's maybe 2 styles. Attached is the light swap, and the garnish removal/install. The latter seems to vary depending on model year. Also, my gen 4 Repair Manual is sorted alphabetically, for example install precedes removal.

    Thanks Mendel, much appreciated.
Thanks Mendel! Wow @ 'outside garnish'. All for a light couple bulbs! Looks daunting, esp the heat lamp part. I was expecting to access it from the inside of the hatch...like the old prius. Looks a bit over my head in my current situation. I'll buy the LED assemblies, and try to get someone to do it cheaper. Only way I will try if i can find a video. Without video, I can easily imagine breaking parts: forcing things that should not be forced. Much appreciated!

One more thing! This 2016 really babied. Got it from my dad who barely used it. It has under 50k miles. My concern: BOTH of these LED lights are out. (one on each side of license plate) This strikes me as odd. I think the idea is that LED last the lifetime of car.....that is their justification for the complexity $$ of servicing it. If so, the chances they both go out seem remote....AND...make me suspect the fault is ancestral to these lights. Toyota said they checked fuse. Is there a dedicated license plate fuse? should I replace fuse even if it looks good? I'm trying to deduce with likely inaccurate assumptions. Thoughts welcome!

epilogue: went to vehicle repair place that services hybrids which I love. I bought the 2 bulbs at Toyota ~ $62 . They charged me $170 for labor. $232 total. Less than the $375 Toyota dealer wanted, still pricey for #$@% license plate light bulbs. Should have just rigged some mickey mouse toggle switch from cigarette lighter duck tapping the wire to the roof....down to hatch....to a little flashlight bulb. Then go to Toyota and brag in loud voice how much money I saved. Thanks for all the advice and help! Auto maker engineers must get orders to design things that bring in revenue. If I didn't live in the salty NE, I'd keep my 2 gen eternally alive like 1950s car in Cuba.
