Featured 2016 Chevy Cruze: MPG beats even last year's Eco model

    The 2016 Chevrolet Cruze EPA fuel-economy ratings beat those of all gasoline versions of the previous-generation model.

    The second-generation Cruze was unveiled last June, and shown in China before that, but is just now going on sale throughout the U.S..

    It achieves a best of 30 mpg city, 42 mpg highway, 35 mpg combined, making good on Chevy's promise that the 2016 Cruze would achieve at least 40 mpg highway.

    So when I first read this, I wondered about the Cruze diesel that was discontinued. So I substituted a Jetta diesel:

    It looks like Chevy realized CAFE is here to stay and decided to bring fuel efficiency in their down market cars. Added the Gen-2 Prius for 'NEENER NEENER NEENER.'.

    The Cruze diesel was on sale. There were a few at dealers around me. GM dropped it for the 2016MY.
    It was rated 27 city, 46 highway, and 33 combined.
    Compare Side-by-Side

    For reference, the Limited Cruze, and also Malibu, are the previous generation model. I think GM couldn't get the next gen model out with the rest of the 2016MY releases, and the Limited models will likely be produced for fleet sales for the next few years.

    The Cruze Limiteds have larger trunks than the new generation with 110cu.ft. combined, making them midsized sedans. They both have the same passenger volume of 94cu.ft. The new Cruze's trunk is actually smaller than the Sonic's, but it gets better fuel economy and has more passenger space.

    The Premier is the top of the line trim for the new Cruze. It has 17" wheels standard and hits 3000lbs for the curb weight. For 2017, the US is finally getting the Cruze hatchback. Plus a 1.6L diesel option.

    I just read the motor trend article on it. It's a shame that they in essence slammed the manual trans as crap. It's a shame because I used to own a Cruze ECO Manual trans and it shifted smooth as butter and you could lug it in top gear at a very low rpm resulting in helping the good mpg. Seems the auto is the way to go for the new Cruze.

    Perhaps MT wanted a sportier geared transmission.
    The Sonic's manual actually has gear ratios for efficient highway cruising, with two being overdrives. Unfortunately, a part wasn't robust enough, and there was some early failures, at least in the first few years.

    Ok, I can see the multiple Cruze 'names' is just GM putting a fuzzy barrier between what other people call different models. So instead of a clean break, GM just fuzz-busted the names. But the "Malibu?"

    I'm using www.fueleconomy.gov for the models offered by the vendor. So I'm confused by the 'Malibu' reference in this Cruze thread as I couldn't find a link or context.

    GM is selling 2016 Malibu Limiteds that are last years model along side the all new redesign, like they are doing with the Cruze. There is also an Impala Limited that is, again, just the previous generation, but it was fleet sales only from the beginning when the redesign came out. It lets them make a little more cash out of the aging assembly line components before finally converting said line to some other model.

    Why GM is selling the Cruze and Malibu Limiteds to the general public is a bit of a mystery. My guess is that it was because the new generation wasn't going to be available when the next year models usually start shipping to dealers. Whatever it is, I expect they will disappear from the retail site next year, and be fleet only. There might not be many on lots right now with the new ones available.

    Then again, Ford did continue selling the original Taurus along side the new Five Hundred for couple years, and then renamed the Five the Taurus.
