2014 oil usage 2 and 1/2 quarts in 4000 miles

    I’ve got 289,000 on this and I’ve never really seen in burn oil like this. I mostly let the dealer change it until last year, then I did it myself until 4000 miles ago. I let Valvoline do it last time and for whatever reason it seems like it is sucking oil somewhere. I’m not attributing this to Valvoline at all, I am just wondering.

    I’ve owned since 168k, no maintenance records for me or carfax show any real maintenance- oil changes, tires. I *have* done the head gasket changed and the EGR cleaned about 20,000 miles ago.

    About the oil thing I know to do is maybe check the PCV valve, that should’ve been changed when they did the head gasket, I know they didn’t.

    Anything else to check? Any recommendations to change from 0w-20?

    You can try a piston soak. Most likely the oil control rings have either gummed up, or worse, rotated.

    Also, it has 289K, be careful how much you invest into it.

    If it gets totaled, you can lose a lot of money.

    Verify if you have the revised piston rings, the ones less prone to oil consumptions.

    It will go to new owner. I’m not doing that. I suppose, if that’s the only recourse, I could just keep on driving it, and keep oil with me until it goes.

    You'll get a dummy to pay $4,000 for it if it's running looks even semi presentable so on and so forth people are really stupid out there today The gene pool of car buyers is very low so people are getting five and $6,000 for cars that will make 20,000 miles and then you need $8,000 in work this is very common today cars down here where I am sell like this everyday and then a week later they're parked in the owner's yard maybe never to be fixed then eventually sold for scrap or very cheap for what's left in parts which in a generation 3 won't be much and nobody wants them and nobody's using them so there's always that but people are paying for them so that's a good thing in your favor You want to make sure you unload and dump before everything is finished but people are real stupid with the Prius they will buy these cars and put $12,000 in them and still have nothing not even a driving car and it doesn't seem to bother them you know I just don't give a shit and stand there and tell him show them on the paper all the stuff they'll hand you eight grand I don't know what it is I know it's hysterical

    Toyota was aware of the low tension oil burning problem which was common across many models from 2007-2014 with Prius being the last new model to use them.

    Prius issues were aggravated by the start of recommended 10k mile oil changes. The extended miles were reinforced with two free changes under 25k miles using dealer bulk oil.

    Toyota even replaced many gen3 pistons and rings under warranty but you had to burn more than a quart over 1200 miles before driving 60k miles. Toyota and Priuschat were nearly silent at the time just as they were when head gaskets started failing.

    The Prius 2014 production change for the improved pistons and rings and maybe their improved head gasket had different sequence numbers depending on origin factory.

    I would send it down the road. The more it burns oil the more that EGR gets plugged, more risk of head gasket trouble, WAY more risk of plugged Cat Converter from all the oil and damaged o2 sensors as well. Trust me, you will have a money pit you can't even sell if you keep kicking the can down the road.

    Would they be a dummy though? I mean if they weren't a Prius fan I suppose. If it needs to be sold, I'll sell it to someone who knows the condition. There's somebody in the region who, if they saw pictures of it, would give a reasonable price. I would say the interior is near excellent, Toyota is supposed to be repainting (at least some of it) soon. What is reasonable. I'll wait and determine that later :). In all seriousness, I have a good friend in Nashville who is the perfect candidate to do Prius repairs and diagnosis. There aren't that many people around that do that. I keep telling him to learn more about the cars and we can buy these up and flip them, but he has no interest.

    He's right not to have any interest because there's not really a lot of money in it and it's a lot of work and a lot of instances the parts are expensive and I don't really know how long you're going to be able to get these brake parts for the generation 3 from Toyota these cars seem to be doing so poorly out in the wild people are buying them but a lot of them aren't getting fixed and driven people buy them by mistake realize what they've done see what it's going to cost and then are like with the brakes on before we even roll anywhere that's reality for people and you can't buy a car for $5,000 and then put six in it You might as well get a car payment of some sort just for 45 mi to the gallon You can buy a $3,500 yards and be making almost 40 for nothing but gas oil and tires The yard is extremely reliable vehicle.

    Yeah if you're skilled enough to do that go right ahead but you're going to do a lot of work on the generation 3 that you wouldn't have to do well anyway absolutely carry on We are not going to waste time on the generation threes the interiors fall apart and all that sort of thing and we generally are in it to keep our cars the 5 or 600k that's what we make on Corollas and old supras and all of our other Toyotas We were quite taken aback to generation 3 couldn't go the distance and now we're finished with that

    I'd counter that by saying anything other than keeping it topped off with oil and driving it until something else major happens is wasting time and money.

    You DO know what's happening when you keep burning oil right? You think it magically disappears into thin air? It's ruining so many other components of your vehicle at the same time that will cost you BIG time later.

    Please do not take DIY'er advice anyone lurking reading this.

    It's got 289,000 miles, my car has been burning oil for 100k, previously I drove a car that burned oil for 100k. Never needed a cat if that's what you're referring to. A rebuilt engine on a car with 289,000 miles is a waste of money, not topping it off with oil.
