So I have a 2012 v (trim level 3) with 180k and the head gasket is going out. So I am at a crossroad here and would like to hear your opinions.

The car has a perfect maintenance history all the way up to the 180k. Most likely the EGR circuit is to blame for the head gasket going out as that is the one thing I didn't take care of in time. Appearance-wise it is very very clean and doesn't show it's age at all. I absolutely love the car and hate to see it go but I need to make sure whatever I decide to do makes sense.

I'm assuming getting the head gasket fixed would be cost prohibitive versus having a shop drop in a used engine. But with 180k on the clock what's the chances of something else going bad and I'm stuck dumping more money into an older vehicle. I really want to avoid this thing turning into a money pit.

Should I sell it as-is private party, use it as a trade-in, keep it and fix it - I'm all ears!

Are you up for a DIY?

There's a fair bit of prep in addition to what's shown, and those guys are very cavalier, cut corners. Still, it's a good video, showing the meat of what's involved.

    And here's a more balanced how-to-do-it-right thread:

2011 Prius Head Gasket Failure | PriusChat

The attached TSB has the part no for a gasket kit, includes the head gasket and many others. Around $200. A lot recommend to replace the head bolts too, maybe another $100. There's a special socket (mentioned in one of the atttachements) for the head bolts, and very specific torque instruction. The timiing chain cover is a journey in itself, another of the attachments covers that.

There's probably more info needed, but that's a start.

it's probably a part out at this point, take the best you can't for it, or drop in a used engine and sell it. whichever is most profitable.

You have listed your options, just do the math on each and decide which is the easiest for the most money in return.

If you have any relatives or young'ins around to either do the work or help you with the HG replace,
then go for it. That would be your best thing.
If you are no way gonna dive into DIY, then possibly your next best is to just sell it as is.
Should be honest in your sale, and just get the most you can, the earlier the better.

There is still plenty of value.
Just have to find that seller that values it the most....or at least close to your value.

    Best of luck.
