2010 prius 12v battery?

I think in general the batteries sold by Costco are as good as any. I have them in my pickup and my lawn tractor. The problem is they don't make a battery specifically for the Prius and their batteries are not sealed such as the Optima and have no vent tube as the Toyota battery does. This may not be be a problem and there is at least one poster on here that uses them anyway. But when mine goes (any day now I expect) I will most likely just play it safe and pay the $200 for an Optima.

 

So long as it is a externally vented AGM battery, you are safe, reversed terminals and JIS Posts certainly make it easier to install, as well)

 

Are you considering also the Toyota sanctioned battery, ie: the one you would get if you just walked up to a Toyota parts counter and asked?

Just curious, since owners seem to stay away in droves from this option. Is it overpriced, underpowered, or? It would be the option that would dimensionally fit.

You won't get stuck on the freeway, if that's what you intended to say. Once the car is started, it doesn't need the 12V battery any more. You might get stuck at home, or at your destination, when you've turned off the car, but not while you're in traffic.

You could always take it to some place that offers free battery tests. At least if they tell you that it's still good, you KNOW it's still good. (And if they tell you to replace it, maybe it's time, or maybe they just want to sell you a battery.)

 

How would tht happen ?? You pull over on the highway and stop the car and turn it off ??

Even an almost dead battery after driven on the highway for some time will have charge to boot the car ... the problem is overnight or a few days left on the parking lot !!! Not getting stranded on the highway ... in my opinion.

 

I still have my original battery and 60k+ miles. No sign of going out. Yet.

 

Quite possibly true. Since battery life is not depend on milage more like time and how many times if ever it was completely discharged. And some other factors like temp ....

When the prius used less often or very short trips .. the 12V battery will not really fully recharged ... and low SOC for extended period of time damages it ... simply will hold less and less charge. Even manual says that car needs to be put on Ready (in park ) to recharge the 12V battery

 

My last prius ,a 2005 with 60,000 miles. I had for seven years and it had orginal battery when I sold it, still just fine no problems ever!

 

I find it really stupid that Toyota didn't put a timer for every light in the car. My Sentra does this, any light that is turned-on will turn off whatever happens after a period of time if the key is removed.

Anyway, since I got the car a month ago, I just checked the battery voltage, it was 12.4V with door lights turned on. I hope the battery will last for a while, I do leave the car many days without using it (I work from home).

 

My 2010 Prius III (June 2009) with 26k miles went in to "P LOCK MALFUNCTION" mode twice. Once the engine started after 6 hours, the second time needed a jump. I know I need a new battery, but that seems like pretty short life.

 

I always claim they last 4 years in any car, they usually beat that, but by 4 years it is time to plan to replace it.
