This system has a feature that is supposed to adjust the sound level to compensate for road noise etc. I had a Ford with this feature and you could adjust the sensitivity. It worked great; adjust the volume sitting still and the volume went up and down as you traveled.

In the 2010 Prius, I have enable the feature but I cannot figure out if the sensitivity can be adjusted and I do not hear that it is working. I set the volume and start driving and as the road noise increases the sound just gets drowned out. If you turn it up, when you slow or stop it just blasts loudly; no adjustments at all.

    What am I doing wrong?

Great question, I have noticed the same thing! I've had Fords, Chevys and Hondas with this feature and all seem to work better and all had different [level] settings. Toyota's just give the option of on or off (or enable/disable), but I sure can't tell the difference...

Oddly, there isn't one with the navigation option. I think (but someone might wanna double check this) that the Prius with the standard JBL audio system (so no nav screen) does have a sensitivity adjustments. Don't ask me how that works.

I notice a difference when it's about 70km/h... It's not gradual.. it just seems to be "louder when above 70km/h and default volume below that"... a very simple system.

Well, you have the option to enable or disable it through the audio set up screen on the nav radio. Why have the option if it does nothing?

The standard JBL, no NAV just has on off. I have a RAV4 as well, non-JBL standard radio but it has 3 levels plus off.

I just think the feature is on or off...I thought it was more of a volume levels limiter. When I've set it on, I've notice it is more for leveling out seperate songs. This is especially useful for mp3s, where you can have one that was leveled really low...then get blasted out with the next one:eek:

    Per the Navigation Manual:

So, one would assume it would raise the volume as the road/wind level increased inside the vehicle... I don't experience this and the sound level seems the same regardless of whether it's on or off...

I have to agree with Paul58, why have it if it does nothing? Do we have any Toyota technicians out there that can point us in the right direction? Any JBL support?

I switched the ASL on and off while driving on the interstate and could notice a small increase in volume in the on position. My prior car had five increments for the ASL function. I kept it at 5 (the highest), and it provided a nice increase at highway speeds. Interestingly, the owner's manual for that car recommended setting the ASL no higher than 2 or 3 (I can't remember which). I have no idea why.

The lame ASL function is part of "Prius Punishment," in the same category as nonexistent auto headlights, inadequate instrument panel illumination, and truncated satellite radio information display--items that could have be included for pennies or a few $s at most and irritating ommissions in a car costing well over $30K. I guess it's Toyota's way of saying that I should have bought a Lexus.

I know you're talking about the JBL system, but I have the Prius II, and the non-JBL head unit has three levels (besides off) for the ASL - low, medium, and high.

I leave it off as turning it on just seems to increase the bass and treble low, medium, or higher. I don't notice a change in volume with speed, but there is a noticeable difference (to me), between the ASL settings in bass and treble.

Thanks for the clarification. I guess I've confused it with the standard audio option.

ASL increases the tone mildly, esp. the high and low frequencies. I have it ON and OFF, but now ON all the time, with Treble 0, Mid +1, Bass 0. For me with ATP, it is either ON or OFF, no adjustment. (In my wife's Acura, we leave it at the lowest setting, as is the case with my previous cars.) I don't like intrusive ASL!

I have the same complaint. The ASL feature pretty much sucks for the Prius JBL Navi, from what I've experienced. I had a Ford that allowed me to adjust sensitivity and was cheaper than this car!

From my searching and this thread, there is no sensitivity adjustments. I'm taking my car into the dealer on Friday. I'll see what they say about making it work right.

My JBL systems has the same feature......suppose to turn up the volume as the car moves faster, thus increasing road noise. As far as I can see my radio does nothing different during any speeds. Not a big deal for us. Still Toyota should do something to correct the problem. !!

Either you guys are deaf or your Prius has issues, but i can hear a difference on the highway with ASL on and off...not a big difference, but you can easily hear it.

Only had mine for a week, and this is one feature I was really looking forward to, so when I stop at traffic lights I wouldn't have to manually turn down the volume, but alas, I don't notice mine working either. Prius II has 3 levels (low, med, high) and "off". I've tried all settings. Maybe as some people mention, it's noticeable a little at highway speeds.

Funny, my 2008 has this, and 3 levels (non-JBL). It definitely gets louder at speed with this set on level 3, not so much on level 1. I've never noticed the Bass/Treble effect. I'll have to check now!

For those of you that can tell the difference with on/off, what version of Nav do you have? I have 9.1 and can't tell at all between on/off.

Mine is the 9.1 in a Prius V, thus no adjustments and no sound difference. I am not hard of hearing by the way. ;)
