2010 Hood Release Cable Loose/Broken (Latch end)

When I went to open the hood, the release handle was very slack and didn't have enough tension to unlock the hood.
Luckily for me, since I had been doing EGR & intake manifold cleaning I had the cowl section and wiper assembly taken out so I was able to reach a long piece of dowel through that gap and pop it open at the latch.
The cable still moves when the handle is pulled so it is attached at that end.
I don't know if I need a new cable or if I can fix it but it does look like a piece broke, the white barrel shaped piece. Trouble is I don't know how it connects, could someone take a close up of theirs so I can compare?
For now at least, I jerry-rigged some wire and para-cord so that I can get it open.

It looks like some weird form-fitting shape rather than just a straight cable, and looking at the routing of the cable in my car, it disappears in behind a bunch of other stuff next to the wheel well which looks like it's gonna be a job to get to. Might have to end up taking off the wheel and inner fender cover to get access because it's probably secured with clips that need to come off. Still not sure how it fits at the latch end though, since it's something I never paid attention to before it broke. Hopefully the new one will make it obvious.

 

I think I see what you mean, by 'fork' you refer to the little opening to the left, and by 'hook' you mean the perpendicular bit on the moving latch part. I marked them in this image ...
