In preparation for buying Nav 11.1, I scoured the forum for hints on how to update. Most efforts to provide readers with "how to" involved installing the DVD under the driver's seat. After several pain-staking efforts to remove the cover, discovered that the "map" dvd is replaced through the car's normal dvd loader. It merely requires that you eject the "map" dvd through the setup and then insert your update. The NAV system recognizes the new dvd and automatically updates the mapping system.

Offered as a time saver for those 2010 Gen III Prius owners.

BTW I paid $169 for the update.

I'm in the northern VA area and would like to update my DVD also. Can you remember the part number and let me know where you bought the DVD? Thanks!

You must have been reading the Gen II forum threads. The Gen II was under the driver's seat. As you found out the Gen III is behind the Nav screen along with the CD loader. There are several Gen III threads that describe the DVD update.

You will need to buy it through a Toyota dealer. The part number for the 2010 Prius is a 86271-GEN06-11. The GEN06 specifies the Gen 6 Nav unit for the 2010 Prius and 11 specifies the 11.1 rev.

Does the upgrade still have the looooong lagtime between entries?

They come out every fall (around Sept/Oct I think), so once a year.

My navi will get an update next tuesday.
It now has 2010-2011 on it, the car is from July 2011.
I don't know if US navi's differ from EU navi's but, in my P3 there's a map update slot behind the display (where the CD slot is) that has to be connected to a laptop, and then a SD card with the update will be loaded through the laptop to the navi system.
That has to be done by the dealer.
I guess mine will get the 2012-2013 update...

Once a year release or once every two years? Are there minor releases with major releases, or all the same? Seems mildly confusing...

For your car in the US Toyota releases a Nav map update once a year around the Septmber/October time frame. The latest for 2012 was just recently announced.

I purchased and installed the 'update' and it doesn't have many of the I-95 changes from Washington to Delaware. I also advise everyone to take a map, as in a paper map or road atlas, and check the route. Most of the time the Nav system takes you along the most traffic light infested routes, or far out of your way, and even past your destination to a U-turn at some point. I have found the map able to save me wasting time and gas. If know the route most of the way, I drive to within a close range, then activate the nav for last few miles. I find it less dependable than it should be, and even unable to name major highways.

Take the time to read your Nav manual and set up the unit to match your driving needs. There are settings to tell it what types of roads to avoid. It will also give you three alternate routes to choose from, quickest, shortest or one other that I cannot think of at the moment.

From your comments above you must not be using any of the Nav's features.

I don't know how it is in the US but I've noticed that up here, it'll favour a road with traffic information than a road that is shorter/faster without traffic information.

IOW, I noticed a change in the route planning after traffic info became available and the data was received by the nav system.

I got this email from Toyota in response to my email about when a Nav update would be available.

    Dear Mr. Pichner,

We apologize for the delay in replying to your email and appreciate your inquiry on a navigation update for your 2012 Prius.

At this time, a navigation update is not available for vehicles with Entune. We do have plans to release one some time after this month and regret a release date is currently unavailable.

You may check with us or the Parts Department at Luther Brookdale Toyota periodically to see if the navigation update has become available.

We have documented your email at our National Headquarters under file (number). If we can be of further assistance, please contact us, http://www.toyota.com/help/.

    Sincerely,

    Kym Wilson
