2008 Prius with 196k miles on it. Have had it since 0ct 2020, when u bought it at 144k miles.

For the last however many months, my Prius has been making this noise when it begins moving in the morning. The thing is, it’s not all the time. It’s very intermittent (which is maybe why I’ve taken so long to post). There are some days I don’t even hear it. And it always seems to go away after moving at higher speeds.

I’ve deduced that it’s not from stepping on the brakes, and it’s not from turning the wheel in a specific direction. So I’m guessing it has something to do with the tire revolutions, and maybe one piece scraping against another??

I’ve also made note that I recognize it more when there have been temperature fluctuations - if it’s gotten a lot colder out, or, if it’s rained and the air has a lot of moisture in it. May sound crazy, but it feels like there’s some correlation there.

(when I initial sent my father a video, he said it sounds like power steering fluid. But I informed him that the Prius does not have that. (That’s correct, right?)). Any way, any knowledge of what it might be/could be/info on if you have had a similar issue, would’ve greatly appreciated.

    attaching video for reference.

    thanks.

Rust??? You folks salt the roads out there? Check your brakes and brake pads. There's a squeaking tab on brake pads to notify drivers that their brake pads need replacement. Rotors rust a bit and when you start off in the morning, the brake pads scrub the rotors clean - that may be the grinding, squeaking sound your hearing or the pedestrian warning sound at low speeds.

Check your backing plates especially up front on the back of your rotors You're in the rest area those things will get loose and literally start to come off the car and be semi hanging and rubbing but they should stay that way once they get that bad they rub forever till you cut them off or do something usually that's done when you're changing the front wheel bearings The rear backing plates they are much stouter as they have to hold the shoes and wheel cylinders
