"Inside the Mazda5 Hydrogen RE Hybrid are plant-sourced biomaterials that help reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This type of material offers excellent heat, shock, wear, fire and weather resistance. We should also add that Mazda became the first automaker to perform bumper recycling, collecting damaged bumpers from cars on the road, removing the paint and reusing the material for new bumpers -- like those of the Mazda5 Hydrogen RE Hybrid."

Wish to heck they'd stop screwing around with this kind of thing and just give us a straightup Hybrid Mazda5. I'd definitely be waiting in line for one of those. Seems to me the Escape is actually using more or less the same engine as the 5 anyway isn't it? I would think a 6 passenger minivan with sportscar (ish) handling and 30+ mpg would be a pretty hot seller. But what do I know?

A Mazda5 hybrid would probably get 40/35 mpg considering how much more areodynamic than the brick SUV styling.

Don't think they'll be space under the hood. The 2.3 litre is the biggest engine in the lineup. The rest of world gets a 2.0 litre engine under the hood. The new Escape Hybrid for 2009 is getting a new 2.5 litre 4 cylinder engine. It's more sophisticated than the current 2.3 litre so mpg might actually improve.
