TLDR. Car wouldn't turn on, needs to be jumped every time, checked battery (am electrician), it's shorted. Got new battery. Threw new battery in. Car makes some chugging/winding noises (I've been told this is some kind of pump?) but won't turn on. beeps when the door is open and they fob is in the ignition, door open icon shows up, wont power up with button press. I put the fob on the button and still doesn't turn on, but a yellow key with exclamation point shows up this time, I'm guessing that means it doesn't recognize a key? I try key programming but it doesn't work. also I feel like there's a 99% chance I messed it up but either way the door locks didn't cycle. Maybe my fob battery is dead and not programmed? I don't know. Also, the remote doesn't work for the doors or alarm. It used to work but I'm not sure why it's not now.

Backstory: I got this car after I wrecked my Focus. I got a job that provided me a work van and I stopped needing to use my Prius for commuting. I still used it for errands. One day I get in it and it sounds like a Harley that's been chain smoking for 40 years. Lil wire dangling down under the car, someone stole my catalytic converter in the apartment complex parking lot. So because I didn't have a big need for the car due to being able to use my wifes car, I put it on the backburner. During this time I got a new fob shell off amazon and swapped the electronics and key to the new shell. I move from the apartment and to do that I need to move my car, so I buy one of those direct fit catalytic converters. I install it, I jump it and I gotta say it does sound a little different but at this point it had been sitting in the parking lot for almost a year without moving so I figured I didn't remember what it sounded like. I drive the car to casa nueva. Now I need to replace the battery. I replace the optimum yellow top it had with a duralast platinum. I'm frankly trying to sell this car because Geico is absolutely robbing me on insurance ($86/m bare minimum coverage for an errand car that's 16 years old and has 170k miles and hasn't been driven more than 10 miles in the last 2 years). Refer to TLDR.

    Hi Gailson,.

This is a very common story. The Hybrid battery in the back the big expensive one died from sitting. A healthy hybrid battery is required to start the car. Can't let an old Gen2 Prius sit all the battery's will die.

A dead gen 2 Hybrid battery may well be the most posted subject as they have all died due to age. Lots of different ways to go at it buy new buy aftermarket or rebuild it yourself.

Using the search forum link up top here's a screen grab of all the pertinent posts about a Dead Hybrid Battery. Lots of good reading. Good luck.

It was always a personal vehicle. I got a work van from my company that's why I stopped driving it. I'm interested in getting it fixed right now.

I drove it last November and it worked fine. I'm seeing a lot of these posts, people describe having that red triangle but I don't have that. It's behaving as if all I did was unlock the car and sit in it. My electrical equipment is rated for 1000v. Is there a way to check the voltage of the hybrid battery with my tester?

If you replaced the key fob shell, did you transfer the little rectangular (pentagonal?) "chip" that's in it? That's the RFID chip for the immobilizer that works in the dash slot.

This thing here in red. Also, do replace the battery in your fob (does the little red LED flash when you press a button?). RFID%20chip.jpeg

    A fellow South Carolinian!
I'm in Columbia about a mile from Lake Murray dam. Are you nearby? I'd be happy to help you out.

You had me worried for a second there. I can't say if I have the old shell, I don't specifically remember that chip (the instructions I saw didn't mention it). However I did drive the car successfully with this new fob to my house from the apartment. Maybe I should try to find my spare key and see if it works.

Edit: the key fob I tried to turn the car on with might be the one i swapped and threw the chip away (possibly) and when I drove it here maybe I used my spare?

So I found my old key fob (thankfully I keep everything, now if I could apply that towards all the extra SATA cables I have in a big box). There was the chip, however its kinda stuck in there, I tried some tweezers to gently pry it but i just heard the chip slightly crushing. I stick the old fob together and stuck it in the ignition and the car turned on after the second attempt. First attempt it wouldn't shift into reverse or drive and the engine didn't turn on. Second time it went perfectly fine and I drove it around the block (about 5 miles). got up to 50 mph. Maintenance require light was on and that's all. I just need to figure out how to get this chip out of the old fob without cracking it. It's pretty in there.

EDIT: heat gun did the trick but I think the fob battery is dead.
