Need a giant vehicle but feeling guilty? Maybe the H2 Hybrid is for you.

GM appears to have moved away from their stance behind hydrogen vehicles today when they announced that the 2006 Hummer H2 will be offered in a Hybrid model. After secretly licensing Toyota's Hybrid Synergy Drive technology in the middle of 2004, GM developed a 425 hp version of the H2 - the current name of the vehicle is H2[sup:7f0f3bff7e]2[/sup:7f0f3bff7e]. In early road tests it's average MPG is an astounding 35 mpg in the city.

The 4-wheel drive H2[sup:7f0f3bff7e]2[/sup:7f0f3bff7e]'s Hybrid Synergy Drive® combines the power of a 5.8-liter DOHC 24-valve V8 gas engine with the efficiency of two high-torque electric motors. Using a series of sophisticated computers and sensors, it constantly monitors multiple on-road variables to provide an ideal blend of power and fuel efficiency for any driving situation.

    LOW SPEEDS
From initial acceleration to low speeds, power is provided by 4WD H2[sup:7f0f3bff7e]2[/sup:7f0f3bff7e]'s high-torque electric motors. Unlike a conventional engine that needs to rev up to reach its torque potential, each electric motor achieves maximum torque from the start, giving H2[sup:7f0f3bff7e]2[/sup:7f0f3bff7e]plenty of power from the get-go. Energy is supplied by a compact, durable high-capacity storage battery. Whenever the power supply is low, H2[sup:7f0f3bff7e]2[/sup:7f0f3bff7e]automatically recharges the battery without needing to be plugged in.

    NORMAL CONDITIONS
In normal driving conditions the H2[sup:7f0f3bff7e]2[/sup:7f0f3bff7e]runs on the front motor and is assisted by the engine as needed. For exceptional highway performance, H2[sup:7f0f3bff7e]2[/sup:7f0f3bff7e]s gas engine powers the wheels and electric motor via the generator. As with low-speed driving, battery recharging may also occur -- the key to why H2[sup:7f0f3bff7e]2[/sup:7f0f3bff7e]never needs to be plugged in.

    SPECIAL CONDITIONS
During heavy acceleration, 4WD H2[sup:7f0f3bff7e]2[/sup:7f0f3bff7e] delivers smooth, seamless instantaneous acceleration from the gas engine and the electric motors. Additional energy is supplied by the battery. In special 4WD driving conditions (such as slick road conditions) the rear motor engages to assist with supplemental power.

    DECELERATION/BRAKING
During deceleration/braking, H2[sup:7f0f3bff7e]2[/sup:7f0f3bff7e]s electric motor becomes a generator converting otherwise wasted kinetic energy into electricity stored in the high-capacity battery. For sudden stops, H2[sup:7f0f3bff7e]2[/sup:7f0f3bff7e]'s conventional brakes are also applied.

    AT A STOP
As the H2[sup:7f0f3bff7e]2[/sup:7f0f3bff7e]slows down and comes to a stop, its gas engine shuts off to conserve fuel and reduce emissions as the electric motors stand silently ready for action.

Expected to have a 35 city / 30 highway EPA mpg estimate, the H2[sup:7f0f3bff7e]2[/sup:7f0f3bff7e] will also reach the EPA's SULEV level. Dealers are expected to begin receiving H2[sup:7f0f3bff7e]2[/sup:7f0f3bff7e]s on their lots on April Fool's Day, 2006.

You had me until the "astounding 35 MPG". You can't break laws of physics....

Yeah, since it's a Hummer, I'd have written "it gets an astounding 14 mpg"

Yeah, good one. The 30 mpg highway is another giveaway.
A massive hybrid vehicle might get ok mileage in city, but highway mileage is still largely determined by drag.

    How about:
The H2 hybrid is the first vehicle to get better mileage in reverse than in all forward gears....

so, it should start appearing on lots today?.. ok.. but where did this info come from? i'm going to see if i can google more info. this would be kinda cool. It would prove Toyota's HSD once again. :) it sounds like the H2-2 would be rear wheel drive with front wheel help? if so, this could be part of the secret to why it's getting good gas mileage. Only test could prove this though. the weight of the vehicle would be great for generating electricity during breaking and such.

One of the best April Fool's jokes in a long time. Perhaps GM wishes it were really true.

Very clever Danny! Thanks for the laughs!

You had me going...sounded like a good idea (Synergy is a great idea).
That last line of April 1, 2006 gave me a good laugh.
    Thanks,

You're all criticizing the mileage stats?

    What about this line:
"After secretly licensing Toyota's Hybrid Synergy Drive technology in the middle of 2004, GM developed a 425 hp version of the H2"

It's my opinion that GM would rather burn all their factories to the ground, buy back every car they've ever produced and shoot themselves in the head before they stooped so low as to license anything hybrid from Toyota.

I was all set to forward that to a buddy of mine at GM (who a week ago asked if I thought Toyota would sell some Prius' to GM so they would have something the public wanted to buy) until I read the April Fool's Day 2006.

    :)

On the way home today, I passed a hummer with dealer tags. On the rear was a chrome emblem that said Hybrid. On the side was a chrome emblem that said H2 Hybrid. I figured it to be a joke but these were permanent emblems on a brand new car. Weird.
