2005 Eventually it will start, no jumping required(yet)

    Hello, so I have a 2005 with 176K miles. Lately, when I go to open the doors I notice that the locks slowly open & sometimes only the driver side door lock. I do not use the alarm and just use the inside door lock to save battery life. I have checked all the fuses, and made sure there are no lights left on. When I go to start the car, all the lights on the dash are lit, but the car will not turn on to the state prior to the engine turning over. After about 5 minutes of attempts the car will usually turn on to ready mode and act normal. the most effective method has been to get it into ACC mode & then push the brake before it will engage. Twice I have had no luck with this method or pressing the brake pedal then the power button and I have needed to disconnect the negative battery terminal to reset the computer. This has worked both times.

    From what I can tell the battery has the power, but something electronically has gone wrong. I have not had to jump start it yet and the HV battery is more than 3/4 full and holding a good charge. No fuses appear to be blown either. Appreciate any thoughts. Original 12v lasted 14 years. Toyota replacement is 3 years & 3 months of the 84 month warranty. I only use the car for groceries and a couple of miles a few times per week to drive to our clubhouse. Thank you in advance.

    If you're using the car infrequently, it's very likely that your 12v battery is just weak right now. Throw it on a charger (4 amp max is recommended if a Toyota AGM battery)

    It "sounds" like it's on it's way out. An electronic load tester can verify. You input battery style, the CCA rating, and run the test. Pro-sumer level testers (Solar BA9 for one) of that ilk can be bought for around $50~60 USD, and/or automotive retailers will often have similar, pro-level testers, will do the test for free. The battery can be in the car for the test; typically test leads do need to go directly on battery posts.

    Again, no coffee, but if you're quite low usage, and have secure parking, consider a smart charger (3~4 amp rating), just leave it on steady. A quick connect wiring harness makes it more convenient. CTEK for one supplies such wiring with a lot of their chargers.

    FWIW, our usage, with a 2010, is around 4000 kms (under 3000 miles) per year. Yup. Ours is pretty much permanently connected to a charger, a CTEK 4.3. With quick connect. The usage is sporadic, sometimes only driving once a week.

    Follow Up On intermittent starting challenges on 2005 Prius after using CTEK 5.0 4.3Ah charger/maintainer/reconditioner: Here is something puzzling? After reading the manual a second time, I decided to try the recondition option on the CTEK unit. After leaving it on until the 8 stages were completed, I unhooked it because all the lights on the unit went blank and headed off to the Toyota dealership to pickup a new battery. After returning home, some 10 miles later, I noticed that the old battery seemed to have started the car 3 times like normal. Feeling optimistic I set the car alarm(for the first time in months) to see what would happen with a small drain overnight. Low and behold it started up like normal and I was able to visit a friend. All I can think is that the recondition mode fixed something internally and the battery is holding a charge. It'll cost me a 20% restocking fee to return the battery, and I am holding on to it for the moment just in case this is a fluke.
