I'm a new used prius owner. I've owned it for less than two months and it died. Took it to toyota and the said the inverter went out and quoted me $4,400! $3,200 just for the part. Any suggestions? Thanks. I'm new to this.
Yes, go elsewhere. $1200 for labor is excessive. You need to source a used inverter, cost ranging between $500 and $1000. Try ebay, car-part.com, or adoptapart.com.
Get a 2nd opinion. Find a shop with Techstream, get all error codes and INF/subcodes then post here. Also, is your 12V battery healthy? A dying 12V battery can cause all kinds of trouble... Used inverter is the way to go...not that hard to install, around 2 hours if you've never done it before and are comfortable wrenching...just remember to properly bleed the inverter cooling system when done...then bleed again a day or two later after driving somewhat to make sure all the air is out.
