Toyota Prius Electric Power Steering (EPS) Pinion Shaft Nut Recall

1. Which models are involved in the recall?

Toyota is recalling approximately 52,000 2001 - 2003 model year Toyota Prius vehicles sold in the U.S. No other vehicles are involved in this recall.

2. What is the condition?

If the steering wheel is repeatedly and strongly turned to the full-lock position, there is a possibility the nuts securing the pinion shaft in the steering gear box assembly may become loose. If the vehicle is continuously operated in this condition, over time, the customer will gradually notice significant increased steering effort when making a left turn.

3. What is the EPS system?

The Electric Power Steering (EPS) system provides power assistance to reduce steering effort. It generates torque using a power steering motor and a reduction mechanism which are assembled in the steering gear box assembly.

4. Are there any warnings that this condition has occurred?

Yes, over time, the customer will gradually notice significant increased steering effort when making a left turn.

5. What is Toyota going to do?

Toyota dealers will install improved nuts that secure the pinion shaft. The repair will take approximately 4 hours depending upon the dealer’s work schedule. Owner notification letters by first class mail will begin in early July, 2011.

6. Is the repair covered by warranty? Will I have to pay any money out of pocket for this repair?

Toyota dealers will install improved nuts that secure the pinion shaft at no charge to the vehicle owner.
