I expect that number will gradually increase over time.

When my P.Prime is driving on electric, it feels like it’s gliding on Teflon, and when the guzzle-line engine kicks in, which is not often, it suddenly becomes sluggish. Then I start hearing it, and I ask, “really, why would I want to go back to gas?”

Indeed, we have to be cautious of words like “electric,” especially “electrified,” or even “hybrid,” amazingly enough:

Many (arguably “most”) car companies are making announcements to the effect that they’re switching to “electrified” vehicles, but all they’re actually shooting for is vehicles where the Prius was in 2005!

“Stop-start” drivetrains are all-too-often being called “hybrids,” which of course they absolutely are *not*.

Yeah, I don’t want to buy another ICE in my life!

Yep, exactly my situation when I bought the PiP. Was a total gateway drug.

Pretty amazing that the same study found 15% last year and up to 20% this year. I would assume higher gas prices are much to blame for that increase, but I'm sure increased awareness is also a part. While I'd be pretty happy with a 5% (absolute, not relative) increase every year, that's not likely to continue.

I agree. I expect that growth rate to increase as more second gen EVs hit the roads :)

As long as China especially, but other countries too, keep their EV mandate on-track, I’m guessing 5% per year is about what to expect over the next 5 years or possibly even longer.

Prius is definitely a gateway drug. I couldn't hold out for a Prime, so next car will definitely be a BEV.

Driving on electricity is a gateway drug and I thank VW with their TDIs for giving me the push. ;)

I know the flyover states aren't the main driver of huge automotive populations ... still, one can't imagine the flyover state areas as being big on anything but SUV's & pickups.

Yep, someday before long there will be electric SUV and pickup options (other than the X).

Jaguar has their I-Pace coming out soon. On paper at least, it looks like a strong competitor for the Model X.

We might also get a Escape PHEV and Kona BEV in 2019.

Wait... I am already driving an EV SUV from 5 years ago.

And those lease returns, they are ending up in Europe, Middle East, and other parts of US...... even though Toyota hates selling them for CA only. It's a 2ND Gen Rav4EV.

The Rav4EV is a long stretch from the size of SUV's that people drive around here. (unfortunately)

Nikki Gordon-Bloomfield, who has owned at least one RAV4 EV, pointed out here:

that there are several reasons why the SUV form factors inherently make for excellent EVs. For example, lots of ground clearance for a floor-mounted battery.

The Rav4 sized segment is the one that has seen the most growth. The people trading in their midsize sedan aren't getting into full size SUVs.

True, but that is still swelling the average vehicle size. Not many large SUV or pickup drivers are moving down to the crossover segment. I wonder how many crossover buyers may want even bigger next purchase and go full SUV?

Nikki has been a real pioneer. Many here on PC don't remember, but way back around 08, she had a DIY plug-in Gen 2 Prius, a 2005 iirc. Sadly, her faithful phev "Velma" caught on fire (while charging) one night - & that - as they say, is all she wrote. It was those early folks that proved their proof of concept, that pretty much countered the manufacturers saying it can't be done in a practical way. Yeah here we are.

Not really, the Rav4 is a smidge wider(0.2in) and 9 inches taller than the Camry, but the Camry is 11 inches longer. The Rav4 is about 200 pounds heavier, but can be more depending on the trim. That weight should drop when switched to TNGA.

Of the top ten selling SUVs from last month, just 3 and half were larger than the Rav4 segment. The half is the Wrangler, which doesn't break out the 2 and 4 door models. There is no full size SUV on that list. The Tahoe comes closest with 24k sales this year to date vs the Cherokee's, at number ten, 67k sales.

I think almost everyone in my active retiree community has at least one CRV sized vehicle. Darn few domestic brands. The young uns have GM/Ford pick ups or huge vans but, where in decades past the older folk would have Impala or Taurus or maybe Chrysler, Olds or Mercury equivalents, not any more. It amazes me how I can tell so much about the demographics of the driver just by seeing the car.
