I've got another baby due in September.
Already got a 3-yr old and a 15mo. old. Currently, I have no problems moving the whole family about in our '04. I have two Britax Marathon car seats in now that take up practically the entire width of the back seat, maybe 10 inches of space inbetween.
What to do when the new baby arrives? Has anyone out there been able to fit three car seats in the back? If so, what brands/models?
Is there a way to legally disable the front air bag to allow for a car seat in the front?
    Any help appreciated.
    :)

I REALLY wish Toyota would deliver a hybrid minivan now! :(

I do not think so. Someone on the forums here showed a picture of three car seats in the back. It looked to be a snug fit but hey they were able to close the doors. :D

I've been searching for the picture. Found another thread indicating Evan Efusco had accomplished this. Still looking...
Evan, if you see this can you give me the info? :)

I don't know if you'll pull it off with the Marathon seats...just too snug I'd bet, but I haven't tried them.

I have some Gracos for the boys (6 1/2 y/os)--5 pt. harness type. And one of those pull-down Gracos for my Daughter (20mo). They all fit in OK, snug, not fun to take them out and put them back in, but doable in 10-15 minutes and I get them all to fit on the LATCH system stuff.

I think your best bet is to start trying stuff out. Actually, starting out since the seat will be rear facing it'll be fairly easy to get them to fit in, it's when they're side by side and the maximum width touches that it gets really tight. We've been doing this 3 kids thing for the full 2.5 years I've had my Prius and it's not at all inconvenient. In fact the seats fit just as well in the Prius as they do in our Highlander Hybrid.

Yeah, well be doing this also come July. My son's booster is pretty narrow, but the other seat isn't, so hte third may not fit. I'll probably end up gettting three new seats that will definitely fit.

Our Volvo XC90 is great. It has a built in booster seat in the middle, so my son is all set. The other two seats fit very easily on either side. Only problem is our third row will be effectively disabled, as ther will be no way of getting tthem once the two seats are in...

We only have 2 kids so the problem didn't come up. However the only time we took the seats out was when a kid got too big for that one and needed a new model :) 2 in my vehicle ('95 Odyssey at the time so still plenty of room behind the center row), 2 in my wife's '97 Subaru Legacy wagon and 2 in Grandma's car. Early on one of us would drop the kids and the other would pick up. No way we wanted to be fitting and adjusting car seats twice a day. The girls are 11 and 13 now. As with the joy of diaper changing, I'm quite happy to be rid of car seats!

That's another thing too. I have two seats, m wife has one plus the built in booster, and the grandparents have two. Right now it means buying a minimum of three more seats! If it turns out they won't fit in the Prius, it'll be even more so that I CAN make them fit.

I can't wait till I can ditch them! The seats, not the kids...

you say you have two marathons in there right now, but judging by the ages of your kids i'm assuming they're installed forward-facing. have you ever installed a marathon REAR-FACING? we want to get one for our 7-month-old son but i'm worried it won't fit in the back seat without making us sit fully upright in the front seats...

if you did install it rear-facing at one point, was it in the center back or behind the passenger seat?

    thanks!

If the kids are big enough for boosters you should have no problem seating 3 in the back seat. The biggest problem is rubbing at the shoulder level...the bases of everything fit in fine.

Well right now it's kid. My daughter is only 18 months, so it'll be a while before she's in a booster.

Hmm... have you considered not having more children? Just a suggestion from an only child of parents who were both only children also :D

My wife IS an only child! If it was up to me, we'd have stopped at two! She wants SIX!

Anyhow, I'm taking permanent measures to make sure it doesn't happen again!

Than again, if we have six, then I'll get that Excursion I've always wanted! (I actually do want an Excursion, seating never an issue!).

Remember those "jump seats" in the back of the old Subaru Brat pickups?

Bolt one in the hatch area facing backwards!

Nope. We just recently bought both of these Marathons when the littlest one met the weight requirement for having it forward-facing. Sorry, I don't have the answer. If you want I could try it and let you know how it works out but I think depending upon how far you need your front seats to move back, it may or may not work for you.
BTW, it was your post about the car seats that prompted me to think about my impending problem. :)

Thanks, Evan. You have confirmed for me that it can be done. I don't want to go the larger car or minivan route unless it is impossible to make it work with the Prius. Not that we would sell the Prius, (that's become my personal baby :) )but we would have to get rid of my wife's just recently purchased Xb.

I think coming from a family of four kids, and feeling that those siblings of mine really added something wonderful to my life, biased me towards having more than one. I guess since you grew up without siblings, and I'm gonna assume you don't feel any worse for it, that happiness can be had without brothers and sisters. :D

Actually, I was completely satisfied with just the two girls. My wife was on the fence about trying for another...because she wanted a boy. Well, it seems like by the force of its own will, this baby made the decision. :p

hmmm. note to self: no children till we're rich.

i'm a semi-only child. i grew up as an only child and met my sisters later in life. while it's not quite the same, it is nice to know i have more family out there, more people who care about my existence.
