1st oil change at 5k or 10k?

What is you typical drive like? How long have you had the car? IMO, I think getting the original oil out early is a good idea (based on UOAs).

 

In process of waiting. Over 5k, will change before big vacation drive, probably at 7 or 8k.

 

For me--neither. I always get the first oil/filter service performed on new cars at ~2,000 miles, to flush out the break in gunk. Did so with my Prius.

 

i plan to do 1st oil change between 2-3k ... then every 7-9k ...

 

I plan on the first oil change at 5k then 10k after that.

 

Since I have the free scheduled maintenance included when I bought my new 2010 prius how can I justify to the dealer tohave my first oil change at 3000 miles without paying for it since oilchanges are included in the plan.

 

If you Leased the Prius and will be turning it over to somebody else, keep the contaminated oil in the engine as long as possible, it won't matter to you, and it saves you $ $ $ !

If you are like me, and intend to actually OWN your Prius for a long time. better change the oil 2-3 times before 5000 miles. New engines will wear more in that first 5000 miles than they will after all the metal parts have 'worn-in' in the next 50,000 miles. Most of this abrasive metal dust created as the new engine parts wear-in is NOT captured in an oil filter. Dealers are in the business of selling replacement cars, so anything that makes them need repairs after the factory warranty expires is good business for them. You might want to remember that whenever asking them for their advice.

 

Changed mine at 1400, 5000 and 10k miles. For the 10K change, I used a TRD oil filter. I'll now go to 20K for the next change.

I agree with New_Yorker - if you're keeping the car for many years, take extra good care of it in the first year.

 

An early change gets all of the initial wear material out. Thereafter, a longer change interval makes sense.

No, I changed mine at 3K.

Will change mine again at 6K but this time I am just going to change the oil filter and then top up the oil. Since I juse fully syn 0W-20 Armsoil and after reading bobstheoil guy I decided to go for a longer oil change distance but just top up and change the oil filter regularly. Apparently the results show thats much better. Who knows but I prefer to change mine then not change it especially the first 10K

Perhaps in the Magic Kingdom of Oregon people take excellent care of cars they intend to use and disgard, but in the rest of Middle Earth, and especially here in NaYawk, people act ONLY in their own self interest. That means that car dealers prefer you don't care too much for the car, so it breaks and wears out. That's how they get to sell lots and lots of cars over and over again.

Similarly the people who lease cars, beat the Livin' _ ELL out of them, do ONLY the barest Minimum of Maintenance, and off load their "Beater" on some poor niave Dupe who buys the Car Dealers Bull of a "Certified Pre-Owned" car that was never actually owned by anyone, it was rented to sombody who only wanted to USE IT.

Sorry I had to be the one to tell you, but this is actually how the world works.

 

I changed mine at 1000K and put in a TRD filter. I changed it again at 5000K and used a normal filter.

I'm at 8200K and will get one around 10K as specified in the manual. For the 10K I may use a TRD or maybe a normal one-I'm undecided.

I'm keepin my 2010...

I am a kindred spirit. I voted for the President, and Go To Church every week, and never voted for Bush-Cheney. I stated the facts. I do that because it otherwise plays into the hands who seek to deceive. Like car dealers who advertise, "Certified Pre-Owned", and sell them to the unsuspecting. I have lived easily twice your lifetime, gone to war, and purchased about a dozen cars in my life, all new. I take extremely good care of them, so much so that my close relatives get annoyed with me when I sell a used one to a relative other than themselves. Relatives also often act in their own self interest I've learned.

I hope you never have to discover what I know about human nature, but I warn you (by my rather blunt fact stating) sincerely to help you and others avoid that day.

 

I believe it doesn't matter. If you want to make $80 disapear go ahead and do a early change, than switch to 10k or you might sleep better at night if you spend money on a early oil change. But i have yet to hear about a wore out prius motor because of following the maint toyota says to do.

Also i thought part of the reason we bought a prius is to use less oil? Driving to the dealers wastes oil, then you change the oil early that could have been used twice as long. So why buy a car that goes 10k on oil then change it more often and use more oil than we need to?

 

And it is sad. But worse you seem to be proud of it. We all know that but we don't bost about it.

There are still good people out there so buying private for second hand is better, but it is still a gamble always buying a second hand car.

 

I didn't buy a car so that I change the engine oil less often. Untill friction problem is solved alltogether I will continue to go on with my own oil change.

The reason for the 10k and keeps on creeping up is because marking to lure you (yes people like you and think like you) to buy the car thinking that it is cheaper maintaince. Even a lot of times it is not even approved they will push the maintaince schedule longer and longer beyond recommedations to lure customers in.

I bought the car to save petrol anyway. Changing oil cost is nothing compared to petrol.

And the more the engine is worn (due to lack of lubrication over the years) your eingine will be less efficient and you will burn more petrol in the future too, not only cost you more money but more problems in the future.

Heck change your Oil at 20k if you want really no one carses.

 

I would argue that it is in a person's self interest to take
care of their car, regardless if they are going to turn it
in later or not. First, there is always the possibility that
you will extend the lease or outright buy the car. More
importantly, though, is that there is no way to predict
when a poorly maintained car will crap out. Will it be
before you turn it in? You run the risk of it dying on
you at the most inopportune time. Having a car I can
rely on is worth more to me than what you can save by
skipping one or two oil changes.

I agree with Octavia, even if for a different reason.
