$170,000 Average Income of Volt Owner

    The average new caddy buyer only earns a paltry $130K. You lucky stiffs. Hey, congratulations! Ok, so naturally, some of the Volt owners have to be on the lower end - just scraping by in order to afford the $40K car ... but that just means the other owners earn even more than the 'marginal Volt owner'! I must admit, I don't feel it's fare for me to pay hardly any taxes ... but due to the way the tax code is written, our business expenses allow us to write off a bunch of stuff that we wouldn't be able to, otherwis. What can I say. Oh ... I now ... the Feds are talking about raising the Volt tax credit to $10,000. SWEET. Provided you make enough to use it up.

    Average is a non-robust statistic. A few people like Jay Leno can really mess with an average. 175 people at $1/year + 1 person at 30M and the average is 170K. I wonder how many other ultra-rich folks, who can choose anything they want, choose the volt?

    The 170K reported was in July when there were about 2000 volts on the road the earliest of adopters (mostly in CA and NY). I've not seen any hard data since then -- just repeating that number .

    I would buy a Leaf. But not for anywhere close to what they ask. $35,500-$28,200 are the prices of the three close to me. Even with the $7500 credit that's $28k. At $20k I'd very seriously consider one indeed at my personal get around vehicle. Maybe even up to $22-23k. Would prefer to lease, though. I am concerned about how the batteries on these EV cars are going to stand up. Their ranges (not including Tesla) are already so tight that to lose much capacity at all will be a real problem down the line.

    I would consider myself far more a technologist than environmentalist and would enjoy one for that reason.

    ...guess you meant $38200.
    Gotta move to Jersey or PA, Scoorb, they get $3500-$4000 off at state level in addition. Then if Obama gets his $10k proposed EV credit you are good to go. Also you can try the cheaper EV's (Mitsubishi?) you will hit your price mark.

    In NJ the 7% sales tax is waived on an EV.

    ...so about $2500 more off a Leaf in NJ...reasonable rebate...
