12v batts for the Prius (only GII??)

it used to be that a camry battery was $79. on sale at the dealer, while prius 12v was rarely on sale, and twice as much money.
idk what gasser 12 volts cost these days, but many people want, (and some need ) a deal.

there was much celebration when toyota moved the 12v to the engine bay in gen 4, thinking it would take a standard size (and much cheaper) battery.
alas, this was not to be, because like gen 5 tires, toyota chose to use a 12v that wasn't widely available, and quite pricey.

 

Everyone's favorite store (wallyworld) has come to the rescue for the Gen 2. About $165ish, out the door.

 

Not just at Wally World. That's the same battery that I recently bought at Anderson Toyota in Lake Havasu AZ. I wouldn't be surprised if Toyota was charging the dealership more for the OEM so they've gone to the EverStart to help out their customers. That dealership has a great reputation for taking care of people around here.

 

This battery does NOT fit the 2008 Prius. The OEM battery bracket will only support 7" wide and the Everstart Platinum AGR S46B24R is 9" wide. The battery well will hold hold the 9" battery without the bracket, but then you'll have a battery bouncing around unsecured. I tried. I made several attempts to male it fit with different options to secure it, but in the end, I returned it.

One thing I have been trying to research, but not finding a good answer yet, is whether you need a specific battery for the 2004-2009 Prius because all the acceptable batteries have the mini exhaust vent but all the same size replacement 12v batteries I have found do not have the exhaust vent. So I'm reluctant to drop one in without understanding the difference a little better. The basic 12v batteries that fit this size category are $100-$140, but no vent. Then it jumps to $250 for this size battery with a vent. So I don't understand why. If I figure it out, I'll come back and update this post.

Thank you for your input. I've had 7 Gen 2s in my driveway at one time and work on various ones every week. Down to owning only 4 now though. It's unlikely that I don't know what battery fits.

You may want to verify whether you have a car without SKS. It uses a smaller 12v battery model S34B20R.
There are threads on the forum that describe how to modify a S34 bracket by drilling a new mounting hole at the bottom so it will properly locate the S46B. Or you can buy the proper S46 bracket from Toyota for about $30, or a salvage yard for $10..
