12V battery group size

The 12 volt battery is constantly charged by the HV battery and should not require a top up unless the car has been left for more than a few weeks without running the engine. This begs the question, how are you using your car, or how far do you drive each day/week?

 

you should be able to find the right size by going to the make of your choice, and plugging in the car info, unless the prime is too new.

I would search for a 2016 Prius. I quickly searched a few and came up empty

The Toyota part number appears to be 0054421171325 for about $200.

i suppose it is in the service manual for 15 bucks. try calling a parts department.

 

Running an accessory when the car is parked, is asking for trouble.

 

When not in READY, I agree.
Leaving the car in READY when unattended is asking for trouble not covered by insurance.

 

Not without raising the hood & measuring. I have not seen it mentioned in Toyota's description.

I just checked an old photo. The battery says 20HR 45Ah CCA 295A(EN)

It looks to be 45 Amp-hours and 295 Cold Cranking Amps, if I read that correctly.

Physical size and battery terminal size & placement are part of the battery group specification.

Most "find your car battery" sites don't list the Prius battery. I found a "DIN 44L" on a British site.

 

3rd gen yes, but 4th gen still early days?

i would call optima and have a discussion. even though they don't list the battery, they do list the prime. maybe they can help.

 

I would not be surprised if the Prime used the same 12V battery.

 

The important part if that question was answered in his original post.

Getting a battery with a higher capacity will likely only help a little bit. He really needs to find a different source of power for his camera.......or change his camera habits.

 

If you do this regularly, you maybe could install a secondary battery. I did that when I had a VW Kombi and used it camping. I had an isolator for the fridge so it ran off the secondary battery, and meant I could always start the car, and once the car was running, it re-charged the fridge battery.

You might even be able to use a Li-ION auxilary Phone battery (or 2 or 3) - they're getting bigger and cheaper?

 

When you are sitting in the car parked just leave it in READY mode. The 12V battery is then kept charged by the large HV battery.
